Various sources are reporting that AMD will be slashing prices yet again tomorrow. AMD had no comment at the time the story was written.

AMD Monday will slash prices by as much as 30 percent on its Athlon 64 X2 dual-core microprocessor series, according to a system builder with a long-standing business relationship with the chip giant.

Hopefully. It's good news for me. I'm building my HTPC soon. ^_^

id rather see them new processors rather than more price cuts....heck their prices now are already rediculously low

You are complaining because their prices are too low as they stand now? HAHAHA. You can't be serious...

Their new processors are coming out 4Q this year on schedule.

Hopefully this doesn't hurt their bottom line too much.

I can see how price cuts now should lead up to lower priced amd machines in the "Back to School" market. Couple that with the ridiculously low ddr2 prices we have today and even the big manufactures should be putting out some very potent machines for really low prices.

Throw in the fact that Vista drivers are in way better shape than they were at launch and we might just see a wave of mainstream buyers finding out that a $1000 machine runs Vista Premium pretty damn well.

Er, how about only you not get the lower prices when they drop, leave the rest of us to enjoy the price drop, mmmkay? :D

It might help them in the mainstream market, but high end buyers are probably waiting for Intel to cut prices on the 22nd,especially with the Quadcore 6600 being cut almost 50%.

Let me add this up. On 35% gross margins, AMD nearly breaks even. With huge price cuts, AMD can't have anywhere near those margins anymore.

These cuts are coming shortly (~a week) before AMD reports Q2 results. Something tells me it isn't going to be good news.

Maybe by cutting prices they'll sell more? But even then it would probably come out to be the same amount of revenue the are making now. Eh, who knows.

Cutting prices to sell more during the "Back to school" period...like someone else said.
They might sell more, but at the same time possibly making just as much as before.

The real perk?
Average joe goes for those cheaper machines, and at the same time is blasted with the AMD logo on everything from newspaper ads to in store signs, to a sticker on the PC itself (sometimes). Average joe gets a decent machine, and quite possibly has some brand loyalty after that.
Its yet another way to win over customers and put a dent in the huge marketing of Intel.

Definitely not good for their bottom line, but atleast there is some positive aspect to it.

Either way, for those of us on tight budgets, price drops are a good thing no matter the financial situation of the company!

Enough price cuts on ancient architecture, AMD, we've all moved on to better performing chips. How about Agena sometime this millennium? How about the realtime 1080p AVC encoding you advertised? Sure would be a lot nicer than sitting here waiting for my DVD convert to AVC at a snail's pace and reading about you cutting prices...:mad:

I can imagine that some day it might be a $100 CPU. There will probably be mid-priced Phenom X2 chips out by then.

Exactly. Hopefully by the time Phenom and Nehalm are here, we will have Kentsfield chips for less than $200 and good Brisbanes (the 3600+ doesn't count :p) for less than $100.

Ancient? P1=ancient.

its happening for sure.

6000+ is 193.99 canadian as of monday.

*UGH* The Socket 939 Opty 185 actually increased in price over the weekend going from $239 to $245. Also, I can't find an FX-60 for less than $350 anywhere but I can get a 3GHz X2 6000+ for $195.

That's because those processor are old stock and supplies are dwindling. AMD doesn't suggest the pricing structure of processors they no longer produce.

Just sell it all and upgrade. Easiest way to do it. I’m doing it. This Friday if the price is cheaper than the current $162.74 at ewiz I’m pulling the trigger :D

FX-60 is dirt cheap. A few months ago IIRC it was about $199 or 225 bucks or something around there. I believe it was www.tigerdirect.com that had the price.
