DVD Jon claims that he has cracked Apple's iPhone activation. Well, that didn’t take long, now did it?

The Norwegian cracker initially made a name for himself eight years ago when he cracked the encryption code on DVDs. And last year, he cracked the digital rights management code that prevents iPod users from playing songs purchased from competing online music stores.

Wow that took all of less than a week to accomplish. What is this guy running on? 100 cups of coffee and 5 hrs of sleep since friday?

No, can't use the phone if it's cracked in this way... I am (and so is everybody else I assume) waiting for a way to use the iPhone on another carrier. My job has a contract with T-Mobile, and I just want a way to put my Sim into an iPhone and use it... Although the 500 dollar price tag is a LOT - I think I'd rather have a PS3...

Didn't they pass a law stating that you phone company has to unlock your phone if you request it. T-Mobile does this. The catch is you will have to either pay the remainder of your contract or pay the $300 early termination fee to use it with another carrier.

Also, how can you purchase an iPhone without the contract? Are you able to purchase the iPhone without going through the store and signing up with a contract?

You can purchase it via pay as you go... all you have to do is fail the credit check and they offer that up as an option

Or you can buy the phone straight out

Or you can buy the contract and pay out the contract or terminate the contract with a termination fee

Why is this news so surprising? There is no mobile phone on the face of the Earth that hasn't been cracked. For most other phones you just have to type in a weird combination of codes and there you go, the phone is unlocked. For the more sophisticated ones you need a computer to unlock it, but still all phones have been cracked so far. The cracks and codes can be downloaded from the Internet. Just need some time to find it.
Of course the media hyped the iPhone so much that all the hackers wanted to crack it first so this crack was due from the very beginning.

Why the need for the cracked activation? I thought what everybody wanted was to have the phone unlocked to use on other GSM carriers.

I believe you have to activate to use many/most of the features, you can not just buy to use it as an iPod or such.

So I cant take my sim card out of my Samsung D809 (Cingular) and put it into a cracked iPhone and use it as my phone with my current $20 plan?

sad panda

o snap

this guy is proooo~

lol

I might just go out and buy an iphone now

That is pretty cool, if you have a human creating a code some human or computer will be able to break the code. They should just hire the guy to come up with some encryption technology if they are so afraid of him.. Is that not how it goes can't beat them BUY EM :D .

I have a phone, an old Samsung SGH-N105, that nobody has been able to unlock yet. I took it to more than half a dozen cell dealers and specialists, who tried using codes, cables, computers, and whatever tricks they do, and they all threw their hands up in frustration, one remaining with it for half an hour after closing, all saying it can't be unlocked. The phone is not SIM-locked either.

So it might not be an inevitability that the iPhone will be able to be unlocked to work on other networks. I already have one counterexample :p

Cracked? Not that surprised. However this fast, now thats something interesting.

Those "specialists" must have either sucked giant penis, or they are unfamiliar with the internets. About 10 seconds with google and I have a code to unlock a phone I've never heard of before. I can't confirm that it actually works since I don't own the phone myself, but hey it's something.

Try *2767*2878# and see if that works. Be forewarned though, I heard that this code does a complete reset of the phone as well, so be sure to write down any personal information stored in it like phone numbers.

Unfortunately (and the deal breaker for me) is you can't do anything with the phone until it is activated. Doesn't make sense that you can't use the iPod, photo and camera features without activating it.

How do you buy the phone straight out? I didn't think you could walk in to a ATT store ask for a iPhone and then leave withou activating it.

I mentioned the last alternative in my post above the one you quoted. I did not know about the pay as you go option, that seems like the best loophole, but you have to have bad credit.

Yes, in fact, the only way to get an iPhone is to buy it outright from the store and then activate it at home.

Thanks for your help, but I'm afraid just about every code (including that one, I almost know it by heart now!) and software program I've downloaded, in addition to going to crooked shops in Queens that seem to do far more than just unlock (some will change your IMEI, which is a no-no) and still nothing. The more respectable places didn't do much better. I give up for now....Since I've had a new phone for a while, I haven't really needed it unlocked anymore , but I would still try out of curiousity why it's so darn stubborn. What's DVD Jon's mailing address....I should just send it to him :p

But you see what I mean....This just highlights the issues with getting a phone to be used on another network. While cracking the iPhone activation is nice, it really doesn't serve much purpose unless you can use it on another network. I think it's going to be later rather than sooner. I hope I'm wrong though!
