I seem to remember a thread with listings/recommendations for RAID cards - have I gone insane and just can't see it or has it been a victim of the forum troubles ???

It's only x2 as far as I can tell - the northbridge has 18 lanes, the southbridge 16, and 16 from each of them are dedicated to one graphics card slot. But even x2 or x1 is a lot of bandwidth - 250 MB/s in both directions per lane! The Highpoint 2310 mentioned would be a good choice for you.

Why "sata II only"? What advantage do you imagine that would have?

I don't know. I just thought that SATAII drives should be attached to a SATAII controller, again I do not know much about hardware/dedicated RAID solutions, given that I have only used the nForce integrated solution up to this point.

Fair enough. "Sata II" is mostly marketing-speak so far, unfortunately - although you do really get a higher interface speed, no mechanical drive on the market will utilize that extra bandwidth. In any case, though, the 2310 happens to be marketing-compliant and has the 3.0gbps signaling rate most often associated with "Sata II".
