A new study has determined that playing video games takes away from homework time but does NOT interfere with time spent with family, friends or sports / outdoor activities. The study also found that gamers may actually be more effective in completing homework assignments, and as a result, they spend less time doing homework.

"Gamers did spend less time reading and doing homework. But they didn't spend less time interacting with their parents or their friends, nor did they spend less time in sports or active leisure activities," said Hope Cummings of the University of Michigan, whose study appears in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

This just in......study shows that breathing is good for the lungs.

Man, they'll do a "study" on anything. I wonder how much cash they make doing those? Maybe I'm in the wrong business.

I can testify to the truth of this report. When I was playing (addicted to) WoW, MC and BWL runs always seemed to take precedence over essays and the like. There is no doubt that my marks suffered because of it.

I think you missed what Steve said:

Gamers do their homework better, thus needing less time.

That report is BS elitism. Gamers aren't smarter than average. Everyone on WoW that attends school has crappy/crappier grades. Even your average genius on WoW complains WoW earned them an A-.

They must have not studied me when I was in my EQ days... friends IRL going out drinking? I can't go, gotta help my guild kill Seru again.

BS I agree.. not just wow but ANY game that a gamer plays compulsively.. WOW gets a bad rap, I used to obsessivly play Q3 all day all weekend, game after game of gibby fun.. for most kids that are into gaming, it's very hard to pull yourself away from it and focus on real life boring shit.. I've gotten much better as an adult from keeping my gaming time in check, but most kids lack any self control..

Yep. I kind of have to agree with you. Grades suffered in college for me, but if it wasn't games, it'd be other things. It really all depends on your priorities. If kids are taught to understand their goals and how to achieve it, then their priorities would change.

haha good one. If the kids parents are more strict... then their want be so many kids being addicted.. Id say is the parents fault.

They must have been addicted to "video games" to pull this stuff out their ass.

I don't believe in homework anyway
Yeah, I mean there's no proof - I've been going to school for like 15 years now and even in college homework's only a rumor. :p

Ha! You mean ESPECIALLY in college, lol. They don't give a damn if you learn it or not, they've got your money.

Also keep in mind that these the results of this study do not mean that YOUR child doesn't have serious problems with playing videogames too much. This study is dealing in averages, and that means that some kids are totally farked, and some are doing just fine.

Or some like me who cant be bothered to build a rig or save the money needed to buy a good one. :(

i hate these studies, because so many people i know fall nowhere in that range.

my grades were fine, i never did busywork homework (didn't believe in the principle of it) but aced all my tests/papers(if i felt the paper was worth my time). i was nhs, spent time on the deans list, and graduated with honors.

however where do i fall if i really only wanted to play games, i hate sports, don't like going out, and i didn't like going out long before i was really hardcore into gaming. And my family is dysfunctional so i dodge them games or no. most of the time the gf and i just sit in with a movie or game.

and yes, i think a year of my life vanished due to eq as well, who would have thought i would have mono, chicken pox, the flu twice, and strep in one year <_<

Actually breathing is severely detrimental to your lungs. If you never breathed ever, and preserved your lungs in cryogenic suspended animation, then they would remain near perfect forever.

You, yourself, however would be dead.

It is called taking responsibility, if your in college it's your own dam fault If your grades are down. If your are in Middle School and High School then your parents should have more control over what you are doing. If you choose to rebel and say fuck the world then you will reap the rewards.

Yes keep blaming the video games it is the fault of the big bad publisher that you turned into a freak killer, lazy ass or a bum from not doing anything in your life...

well "homework time" is up 1000% in the last 20 years anyway. Seems to me we should figure out how to teach these kids while they are at school, and let them be kids when they are at home/

You forgot to account for the fact that kids are stupid. I remember my pokemon addiction, can any of you?

Weight lifting and football pratice take away from homework time too, and possibly leads to acts of "roid rage"

but you'll never see an article about that

:D
