AT&T is supposedly working hard to put an end to the wave of iPhone activation horror stories that are spreading across the web. Any of you having problems activating your new iPhone?

"We are working on any issues on an individual basis with customers who were impacted," said Michael Coe, a spokesman for AT&T, the Apple Inc. device's exclusive carrier. Nearly all customers have been able to activate their phones within five to eight minutes, he said. Without activation, not even the phone's alarm clock works, leading some unhappy customers to joke that their inactive iPhones are little more than expensive paperweights.

Apple should have known this when signing up with AT&T. lol.

Had a customer come in to my BBY yesterday with an activation problem. We traced it to a bad dock....

Just adding my $0.02 - I have been a Cingular customer for 2+ years and have also been waiting for the iPhone for over 6 months. My activation went smooth as butter, in fact it was SO fast, easy, simple for a moment i HAD to be doing something wrong.

My hat goes off to Apple and AT&T for everything they have done, in reality the self activation saved TONS of man hours, in terms of the "traditional" way of activating a phone at a provider.

Keep in mind too -- with a product rollout on this scale there will be problems, but thats a universal thing no matter what it is. Also keep in mind that while there might SEEM to be a ton of people getting screwed in the activation process, its really just a TINY percentage that is screaming really really loud and hence trying to make the iPhone look like a complete failure. Didn't apple sell like 1.5 million of these things in literally one day?

It's like anything. Only the people having problems will be the most vocal.
Where did you get that 1.5m number from? Last I read, 200k were sold, and that was a success.

Yeah but you don't know that do you? You think you know.

Do we really KNOW anything? For all we know, this could all be a dream. Someone else's dream and when that person wakes up we'll all disappear with naught a sound or rememberance. For all we know, the iPhone is really made of space-age chocolate and ribbons of caramel.

My ex girlfriend who isn't tech savvy at all was able to port her number over from T-Mobile and activate the phone without an issue. Props to Apple and AT&T for making this almost idiot proof.

No...it has been proven time and time again that a people typically only complain when stuff is broken and silent when it is working. It is that way with consumer products as well as in industry. Silence is usually proof you are doing your job right.

...so your girlfriend is "almost" an idiot?

Well, it IS an Apple product. That's what they try to do... *chuckles*
I'm glad that AT&T seems to be doing something right for the "most" part on this. ("most" just to satisfy piako) I know my roomie and I have been insanely frustrated with their internet access in the East Texas area. But on the other hand, I have been a Cingular customer for quite some time now, so I guess there's not too much reason to doubt their cellular half.
Man, I want one of those phones...

2% failure rate is pretty damn bad IMO. It's a pity people will be apologists for anything that fails 1 out of every 50 times.

if they sold 500,000 iphones at $600 a piece when it cost them $220 to make that means they made a profit of $1.9 billion dollars on a fucking phone.... jesus

No, it cost them $220 to buy the parts. They still have to pay for the machinery and the workers that assemble those parts. Of course, I'm sure Apple paid a bit (possibly quite a bit) less than $220 for the raw parts, but I would still say their total build cost is more than $220 per iPhone. I would be surprised if their profit margin was less than $100 per iPhone, though.

My activation was super smooth
i was scared

i see smooth sailing...

Add Research, Develompent, Testing, Marketing and Manufacturing.

500k x $380 = $190 million, not 1.9 billion.

and as another guy said on this forum.... the software!

If it really did took apple $220 to make the iphone well to me the iphone looks like a $500 phone*what they priced it at*

so then after apple gets all the money back for making the iphone maybe in half an year? Then we should see the iphone prices dropping? :)

You can also count on Apple to receive $$$ each month from each AT&T clients using the iPhone.

It's not a 2% failure rate. It's a 2% delay rate. The activation process was slowed due to the system not being able to handle so many people at one time. Haven't heard of many failures.

Sounds like a failure to me. It did not shit functioning at 100%. I bet the message even said "Activation failed"!
