Is there going to be a noticeable difference in performance between installing the OS on a 7200RPM drive and installing all other apps/games/etc on another 7200rpm drive compared to installing OS/games etc on a single 7200RPM drive?

With that said.. any difference in installing OS on 10k drive and then 7200RPM drive for games, etc. ?

What I have heard many people do is they install the OS and games and apps on a Raptor and then stash all the other data on a 7200rpm drive.

Since 7200rpm drives are considerably less noisier than 10k drives, does the raptor get accessed that often that its noticeable ?

i have 2 raptor 76GB hard drives and 2 200GB WD 7200RPM hard drive, all in a p180 case, and i can say there is a noticable difference between the raptors and other 7200RPM hard drives.

on raptor hard drives, games (such as Company of heroes) load about 30% faster, in HL2 even faster than that. my OS boots up in 13 seconds (after the bios is finished with tis stuff) and boots from the hard drive.

the raptor is worth the price for a single drive, however.. i build a computer for my dad with 2x 7200RPM 320GB hard drive in raid 0... and that was noticibly faster than a raptor or about the same cost.

so, its really up to you, i'd go with the striped array, its faster and gives you more space.. but it is a little less reliable (if 1 HD dies yer screwed)

Thanks SippieCup.

Guess that settles it, lots seem to voice that the raptor is pretty fast when it comes down to it for booting/game times.

Going to go with a 150GB 10k Raptor + 250GB WD2500KS.

If the games and the OS are accessing data on the HDD at the same time, spreading the load over two hdds in the way you suggested can provide significant improvements.

Seek times should still be MUCH faster on the raptor than the Raid-0, Especialy on a somewhat fragmentd volume. I have had 3 or 4 drives in Raid0 (7200RPM) and there wer enot as quick as the Rappy.

Noise wise I really can't hear either of my drives 7200 RPM or 10,000 RPM. Guess I jsut have the sound Isolated to the point of diminishing returns.

Haha, great to know.

Really hoping the raptor's ain't that noisy at all but the actual HD clicking shouldn't be that bad.

Just getting really antsy to build the August rig already..

I'm still /jealous over your double Westies, but having one myself eases the pain... :D ;)
