PCI-E Question.

Yes. Just make sure to get the dimensions of the card and your case to make sure it fits.

No, e.g. Asrock 4Core VSTA has a PCI-Express x4 slot, wont take certain video cards e.g. x2900xt 8800 gtx

check your motherboard manufacturers website first and if there isnt a compatability list then check to see if anyone else has made this hardware combination and whether they had any problems.

Generally if you have a PCI-EX 16 slot it should work with most graphics cards, but it is always best to check, this goes for RAM too, motherboards have compatability lists for RAM modules.

No guys, think.

A PCI-E 16x card can't go in a 1x slot. :p

They can if you have a "universal" slot connector. The performance will be craptastic, but the card will work.

For example, my Asus A8N5X has a "universal" PCIe slot that actually runs at 4x, but can accept a 16x card if I feel the need to do quad monitors. So long as the card fits the board, it should work.

So long as the graphics card is built to PCIE-specs, it will scale the links down to whatever is available. This is what allows SLI to work with only 16 PCIe lanes.

The OP asked:
Can ANY pci-e video card go on ANY pci-e motherboard?
Since there is an "if" in you post, the answer to the OP's question is no :D

Right.

But I hate answering "yes" or "no" to a question that really has so many qualifiers. I find it better to explain the question better than just give a one-word answer :D
