A U.S. House of Representatives panel said today that it will hold a hearing later this week on Internet gambling, which is effectively banned in the United States.

The hearing will examine whether Internet gambling can be regulated to protect consumers and the payments system, said the House Financial Services Committee. Committee Chairman Barney Frank introduced a bill in April that would repeal an effective ban on online gambling imposed last year by Congress.

I'm not a gambler myself, seen it ruin too many lives. But if they're going to allow online gambling, then it should be as stringently regulated as casinos. The potential for abuse is too great not to do so.

Why dont people have the right to ruin their lives if they so choose?

Funny, you can spend all your money on other addictions on line (cough WOW cough) but yet they want to regulate gambling?

If you bought state lotto tickets, then it's legit, since the money goes into the governments pockets... but if it's something not state sponsored such as on line gabling, then it's wrong.

People should be able to do what they want, they are going to do it with or without the internet.

Not suggesting gambling should be banned, but without regulation,it won't be gambling it'll be outright theft, the house will always win.All sorts of scams and rigged games will pop up.

I agree with you, however, with what you said, the problem would cure itself.
