Wired’s Gadget Lab has the low down on rewritable discs for Blu-ray and HD DVD recorders.

Taiwan disc maker Ritek says it plans to start making rewritable discs for Blu-ray and HD DVD recorders. BD-RE discs will hold 25GB, enough for three hours of high-def video or six hours of standard video. HD DVD-RE discs will be 20GB. Both will sell for about $10 a disc.

Good news. 0_o Hopefully the HDDVD-RE drives will be a reasonable price. I'm sure they will be since HDDVD seems naturally cheaper than Blu-ray costs in the consumer market right now. But.. what happened to the -RW naming scheme? Its -RE now?

I think "Both will sell for about $10 a disc." covers that. :p

Uhhh, I have several bluray rw disks with me here......

Just as soon as the burners get to the $50 price point that they should be at TODAY. Lets face it, the extra electronics involved increases the cost of a DVD burner by about $10. So instead of $40 it should be $50.

Call me when you get there.

If you have evidence for that, it would be interesting to look at. Considering analysts put the cost of producing the PS3 at $800+ with just a Blu-ray reader, I have a sneaking suspicion you're wrong.

DVD technology is now 10 years old (availability-wise, anyway), by the way, so it's hardly surprising that both players and burners can be so inexpensive compared to Blu-ray and HD DVD devices which have only been on the market for a year.

One of the big advantages Blu-Ray had/has over HD-DVD is that recordable discs have been on the market for months. I can go into my local CompUSA and buy 25 GB BD-RE discs right now for $25. (Amazon has 50 GB dual-layer BD-RE discs for $70. 25 GB BD-RE discs for $22, 50 GB BD-R discs for $36, and 25 GB BD-R discs for $18.)

By contrast, Amazon doesn't have a *SINGLE* HD DVD-RW, and while HD DVD-R discs cost less per disc than BD-R, they cost more per GB. (And no dual layer (30 GB) HD DVD-R discs, either.) So if you want more than 15 GB on a single recordable disc, or more than 4.7 GB on a rewritable disc, you have to go with Blu-Ray right now. (Or some of the more esoteric proprietary formats.)

Here's my problem with this.

1 x 25GB BD Disk = figure "$10" like they said.
# of disks to backup a 750GB drive = 30
Cost of backing up a 750GB drive = $300
Cost of 750GB drive = $199sata, or 189 pata.

500GB drive costs $100
Would cost $200 to back it up.
EASY to use external drive enclosure = $10

Wouldn't it be easier to just copy the data to another 500gb drive and stick that drive in a box.. or hell.. 2 drives that you remove?

This media won't make sense until it costs at least less per gigabyte than an actual drive.
Which is why DVD+/- r still is better. "470"GB of dvd+r (100 disk spindle) can be had for $20 or less.
"850" GB (100pack of dual layer) is over $100 wherever I can find it, and more commonly around $150.. but 200 DVD+Rs is less than $40.

Yep, bluray burners have been out for months and so has their media. HDDVD counterparts are not even out yet, nor are the write drives.

I find it hard to play movies from the Hard Drives on my Blu Ray player. Also add 40 bucks for an external hard drive case (cause CD's are portable) then remember you have to carry around a usb cable and AC adapter then you understand why a spindle of cd's is a much better portable storage device.

External HDD case was mentioned in my list.
$10

I'm not talking about using a BD or HD recorder to pirate your High-Def movies. I'm talking about the validity of it as a data backup device.

100 BD disks + BD burner = $2,500 on top of the cost of a computer to burn the disks.

Full HTPC with 2.5TB of hdd space connected to a home theater system = less than $2,000

I don't plan on moving to next gen optical storage for a long time. I can remember booth camps looking to protect against "premature value degradation" to me that means how to keep our products from getting cheap.

As much as this news is awesome I'm still waiting for my cheap DL DVD media.

Most people do not care about the media costs, and for those who has BluRay, are probably not hurting for hard drives either.

I have both, my storage goes onto hard disks, when I am ready to archive... out comes the bluray disks.
