ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT @ [H]

How am I assuming to much, it looks great on paper and it performs great in certain games and applications some that werent tested here, I just think that you guys are shutting it down too quick, a month or so from now if performance doesent improve we will have a better judgement and even then we dont know how these different architectures perform in DX10. Maybe the x2900xt kills the 8800 line in DX10 games who knows, its way to early to make assumptions, today is launch...

We can't make assumptions on future DX10 titles, but we can certainly make conclusions on today's games and show you which provides the best gameplay experience. If you go out and buy a card right now for gaming, this is what you will get.

before i write this card off i'll wait to see confirmed CDN retail pricing. if it's $400+CDN, i'll be looking at it in the exact same light as the GTS/GTX anyways; ridiculous...if it's less than $400CDN, by some sweet miracle, i'll have to have a closer look over the coming weeks... and here i was biding my time with my 7600's, specifically waiting for this newest technological marvel... it's not a complete bust though (in my eyes, anyways) until the retail price surfaces and stomps out all hope of a 'bargain'.

it's a good thing i'm still stuck in 2006, as far as gaming goes. having three great dx10 titles to choose from would be the only scenario that would sway me and my credit card now.

great review, as always.

EDIT: 10:00am, monday morning --> sapphire HD2900XT 512MB $489.00CDN.... level 70 master yikes.

every review sites benchmarks are different. In the [H] review for example, the 2900 XT looks especially bad, in techpowerup it looks especially good, see for yourself:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/HD_2900_XT/5

Well, every benchmark that ATI showed us they were winning also....the keyword you need to focus on there is "benchmark." Their selection of games the site linked above benchmarked are simply terrible. Jesus, they did not even use 3DMark06...

I don't see how you could put any merit into their conclusions at all.

its just based on techpowerup, the 2900 XT offers nearly same perf as the GTX but costs $150 less. when reading your review even the thought of getting 2900 XT over even the GTS seems silly.

Again, I can't speak to their evaluation method, I am not familiar with it. I can tell you about our evaluation method however, and it involves playing each game, no timedemos, no scripts, only real-world gameplay.

found something else potentially disturbing. it looks like FEAR is running in 16 bit :S

Look under the ledge, and at the side of the ledge. SERIOUS banding. could use some dithering  ;)

Love the way [H]ardocp review...... appreciate it more and more every time they have a new video card review :)

True true but there were some glimpses of the x2900xt's power and then there places were it showed surprisingly weak performance (STALKER). And some newer games weren't even tested, it all points to weak drivers, especially since a number of websites reported driver bugs and strange performance. Its too early to say that the card is a failure, perhaps the next driver revision will already improve performance greatly. So I will save my judgement a little longer, since there is obviously some bugs and instances were performance has been strange.

Still getting one :D ATI all the way.
Period.

I want to have my GPU @ 1GHz

Also people need to take in to consideration that the drivers are still BETA... so don't draw your conclusions yet ;)

Like all others, another great review. Looks like I am keeping my 640mb 8800GTS for a little while.. LOL.

Ok ok ok so these cards blow for the best price/performance in the gaming market...

WHAT ABOUT FOLDING?! :D :D :D

Maybe ATI has some hidden power in these cards for folding we haven't tapped yet.

Stop being a fanboy. fanboys are why ATi didn't try hard enough this round. AMD AND ATi make for one hell of a large fan boy base, just like with the PS3.

8800GTS Overclocked > 2900 overclocked

and good fricking luck getting to 1ghz without really good water or phase. (and volt mods. )

Someone mentioned folding. Stanford is working on a G80 client. Supposedly they found a bug in the NV driver (shocker) and submitted a report so it can be fixed. I'm guessing it's a showstopper w/their client. But they are working on one.

ATI would not release the Folding client to us to test with. We were actually counting on it for power testing. :(

Of course we have no idea how DX10 games will behave.
Well we know that so far a certain beckoning Señor Juarez doesn't play well with anyone.

Thanks for taking the time to do up the review. Hope to catch another one when the HD2600 comes out, whenever that is.

I don't know if this situation is funny or sad... I had hoped this card would be competitive so GTX prices drop, but with shit performance and crazy watts from 2900xt I doubt nvidia will care.

argg i realy wanna go ATI but its hard to justify speding the extra money over the GTS.

It's a personal thing... alway had my Intel and always had ATI, never owned AMD chip nore nVidia card. Don't how to explain it

Lol, I had a Russian friend with the same mentality. You might as well just not upgrade in this generation and wait for R650 or R700.

"The Radeon HD 2900 XT overclocks like a friggin’ mad man!" - Brent Justice

I have my fingers crossed, good water should do the job.

unfounded Bias. its funny though, your system transcends brand loyalty and the CPU and GPU are waging war :p

It is a happy situation! It has knocked nearly $100US off the GTS 640. With a little luck ATI will be able to rush the XTX out the door to get you a few bucks off the GTX too. ;)

No doubt the XT's probably a pretty solid performer at 1 GHz. Perhaps that will be R600's sole redeeming quality, but prepare to say hello to a new PCP&C PSU (or at least something that can pretend to perform to similar standards).

First off I have to say that I bet nV just sold thousands upon thousands more G80's with reviews like this lol.:p

Now on to what I have to contribute. I have a Bad Axe 2, so what I actually want to see is 2900XT CrossFire vs. a single 8800GTX(what I currently have), since my mobo can only dual dual cards in the form of CrossFire. I plan on getting a 24" monitor very soon with 1920x1200 res so maybe the 2900XT will be better there. Also about CrossFire and the 2900XT, I dont care about power usage and all that, I just want raw performance as I dont pay for electricity, and I use dual PSU's so I probably dont have to worry about a PSU problem(might even put the Aux Hiper psu in another machine and get a different Aux PSU for my system).

If there is one thing ati can take from the HD 2900 to their next high end card it will be the memory subsystem. That thing looks like its a beast. Add some good gddr3 1000 memory or even faster gddr4 memory and the performance looks unspeakable. I really don't see a reason to devote more time on their memory subsytem. Maybe this means that they can focus all efforts on the gpu next round >.>.

great its a flop:rolleyes: I love ATI but the really need somthing that makes them look good and I WAS going to get this card for my new build but I am starting to have second thoughts. I am really sad to see that it can't really compare to a card that is 50 bux cheaper! I guess I am going to stick to building mediocre machines....

*cries because hopes were smashed*

This is disappointing. I already bought a couple GTXs for my systems back in november but I was still hoping ATI would step up and bring something that nvidia would have to catch up to, especially being this late in the game. :(

Anyone who is closely familiar with STALKER's development knows that it was specifically optimized for Nvidia's GPUs right from the beginning
Please. That's not quite what TWIMTBP is all about.

Actually it makes sense. Think back a couple years ago or more. nVidia was REALLY close with AMD, heck even all the nForce chipsets were AMD only.

uhhh i bet people's jaws will drop when 1GHz OC results will pop out :D

And plsss drivers, the drivers are still BETA.

7 months not long enough to fix the drivers?

They might have a monster folder here....quite possibly 2000+ppd. But considering power costs and the fact that you can build a new e6420 based rig for the same price as this video card........I'll take a whole new rig.

WTF AA FTL!!!!! :D

I share your same thoughts. I bought my 8800 gtx the day before thanksgiving because at the time I did not want to wait 3 months and the g80 did everything I wanted. I did hope that ati could bring something that would beat the g80 though because I am an ati and amd fan :/.

Great review, even though the results were not what I was expecting. 1ghz on the stock cooler hopefully means that when they go to 65nm it will be able to clock well. At least we should get to look at some ungodly power consumption and benchmark numbers wtih this card.

I was holding off on beginning my yearly upgrade because I was awaiting the outcome of ATI R600 line versus Nvidia G80 in a performance, performance-per-watt, and bang-for-the-buck comparisons.

Now I'm absolutely certain I'm buying a 8800 GTsomething-or-another.

For the electricity used in the X2900 XT, I ought to get something far superior to the 8800 Ultra. For the X2900 XT to be a value at it's suggested cost, it needs to regularly out-pace the 8800 GTS 640 MB. It fails to do neither.

In contrast to the graphics card I have now, anything that costs over $250 these days is a speed bump, no matter whether it came from AMD or Nvidia. However, if I'm dropping over three bills for a GPU, it needs to do more than perform. It needs to perform efficiently, and it needs to perform consistently better than anything I can find in at the same cost.

Here's hoping ATI does better with their next batch of GPU's.

this review seems awfully nvidia biased, make sure you read other reviews before you draw your own conclusions

Thanks for your feedback. Would you care to actually share how this evaluation is biased towards NVIDIA? Because if it is, I would really like to know how you figured this out.
