So guys, I need advice on the best CPU HSF :) preferably quiet while still moving a bunch of air. Thanks!

Yate Loon 120mm (same as Nexus 120mm)
Noctua 120mm
Scythe S-Flex (?) 120mm
Yate Loon 140mm

EDIT: ouch, sorry for only listing fans ... it's late :(. Tuniq Tower 120, Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme (with any of the above listed, probably Yate Loon 120mm).

If your case can fit them, try:

Thermalright Ultra 120 or Xtreme 120
Tuniq Tower 120

the tuniq is over, there is way better tech, go with the thermalright 120 or i have the scythe ninja and it also cools well.

sorry for having too little description before. This HSF is for the LGA775 socket and I do mean the whole HSF, not just the fan :)

Also, this will be for a AVAdirect computer, so I'm gonna buy from them with my new computer, since they use a bunch of Zalmans, which would be best for my requirements?

I thought you said you wanted the best air cooler? not just from Zalman. If you have to get Zalman, then their 9700 is the best.

The Tuniq is still one of the top 3 air coolers, only being topped by thermalright's Ultra and xtreme 120's.

There is only a 1-3c difference in temperature when comparing the tuniq to the ultra or xtreme, however, the tuniq can be had for as little as $50 including the fan. The thermalright units cost more and come without a fan.

The whole fan, not just the fan? Kay.

Zalmans really aren't all that quiet if you're not comparing it to early Prescott stock fans...you can turn them down as they frequently come with an inline fan adjuster, but then they don't do so well. If you feel comfortable installing it yourself, you should strongly consider getting a better heat sink & fan elsewhere. Those integrated jobs Zalman whips up look pretty, but Thermalright / Scythe / Tuniq make better heatsinks, and one of the mentioned fans will cool better while being quieter (may want to make provisions for undervolting them to silence them further).

Thanks for the link on the Tuniq! Although i really want the Ultra 120, i think that 90$ for a HSF solution is just "too much". Might as well go watercooled. Now, can someone explain what is the difference on Ultra-120 and Ultra-120 EXTREME?

They're both super awesome. The Extreme is better.

Extreme weighs an extra 45g for what that's worth, and the product page says it has a super special "bent winglet design to minimize airflow resistance". Basically, they tweaked the Ultra to be more EXTREME.

I just got done installing the Ultra-120 Extreme, coming from an NT9700.

I'm down 4 degrees on idle, and at least 10 degrees on load (could be more like 12 degrees), overcocking my older (2006) E6600 [the one that's in my signature].

Comparing this to the new (built in the new Malaysia facility) E6600 build, this tells me the older (2006) chip just likes to idle at higher temps; but, at lower volts lower.

Now get this, w/ the 120 extreme, my idle to load temp difference is only like 3 to 4 degrees; and that's with very very low fan speed. Amazing.

My Arctic Pro 7 is doing just fine on the new build w/ a new E6600 (Malaysia), and there's no reason to change that one; I think it's cooler than the 2006 E6600; on idle it's 32 - 34 and mid., to maybe, upper 40's on load.

All of the above is 400x8 = 3.2

Let me say this again, maybe 3-4 degrees idle to load w/ very very slow fan speed (the fan jumps from maybe 900 to 1200 (it's a Yate Loon D12SM-12; that's the medium). I really don't need any faster fan than 1600. Man is my TJ09 build (the older one in my signature) quiet now!!;)

Last comment: I had to run that NT9700 at 1600 idle, and maybe 2400 at load, and the results were still poor compared to the Ultra-120 Extreme.

What temps under load did you get with NT9700? And what fan did you buy along with Ultra-120 Extreme? My 9700 LED gives me 60C under heavy load in Orthos, and I think it's too high.

Under load w/ the NT9700, I got very upper 50's, with spikes to 59 to 61 w/ orthos, etc.

Those aren't bad temps and very acceptable for a c2D.

But, if you're an extreme overclocker, which I'm not, this thing (120 extreme) is great; An hour into orthos, and the temp is 47 - 48 degrees (that's from, say 59, on the NT9700).

But, that's also w/ very low fan speeds, 900 - 1200, not 2300 - 2650.

The fan is shown above: a Yate Loon D12SM-12 (medium), but it really isn't necessary; the motherboard slows it down to 800 - 900, no load; and my older (2006 built) E6600 has always idled hot (41). My new E6600 runs cooler at idle (32 - 33), but needs more volts.

Let me say, both heat sinks do better at dissipating load heat; that's obvious.

I just got done ordering my Tuniq Tower. I hope it does a better job than my lame Thermaltake 775D.

What do you guys think about the thermaltake big typhoon? I just finished building my new machine.... its also the first machine I've ever built... I put a e6600 in a badaxe2 and I idle at around 30-32c and under load I'm anywere around 38-45...

Everything is at stock speeds but I'm reading up on oc'ing and gonna be doing that soon... is that hsf fine should I get sumthing else?

I'd second the above comments about the enzotech ulta-x being a good choice. Good temps and it fits well. Design attachment is first rate.

And for whoever in this thread was talking about AVAdirect build, they have the enzotech ultra-x in their drop down choices now (they were kind enough to add it at my request, and now that they've learned from incorrectly installing mine, I suspect they'll be good to go putting this excellent cooler on any build they put together).
