Power usage, do you turn off or let sleep?

When you get up to go somewheres else away from your monitor do you turn it off or do you let it go to sleep by itself or do you have it set to never sleep so it's just always on? Usually when i'm walking away for more than about 10 minutes i just turn the monitor off. With as hot as the monitor gets it seems to me that less time on the better, and with less hours on the backlight the longer it'll last. Or am i just fooling myself? What puts more wear and tear on the monitor, leaving it on, such as backlight lit and screen on or turn the whole thing off only to turn it back on a little later? With a 600 dollar price tag i'd like my 2407 to last as long as possible.

I let mine sleep. Some stores leave their LCDs on all the time without a screensaver, and the result is a horribly spent backlight after a few years.

Mine goes to sleep after 15 minutes of no mouse movement...no reason to ever totally power down imo.

I leave the monitors on unless I think I will be away from my desk 30 plus minutes.

I have mine to shut off after 10 min, but I I know I'm going to be away for a while I just hit the power button.

Mine is set to always on but I have a button on my quick launch bar to send it to sleep when I know I'll be away for a bit.

I have mine sleep during the day, but I turn it off at night because it's in my room and it's little blue blinking light manages to drive me insane.

That's cool, how does one get that button?
I wrote a program to do it. I don't know if there's an easier way.

I'll link to it if you want. It's untested though and requires .NET. It's just something I quickly knocked out.

During the day, I just leave mine on and have it set to sleep after an hour, but I do switch it off at night. Monitor is a 20.1" Samsung 204B.

I have it set to sleep after 20 minutes, but if I know I'm going to be leaving the room for longer than that I turn it off anyway.

Mine goes to sleep after i turn my comp off, I dont think it ever turns off if a screen saver runs.

That's great. You're my first tester. ^^

It's pretty rudimentary. It should really wait n milliseconds before activating the power saving mode, to filter out errant mouse movements, (among other things) but I can't be bothered. >.> :D

:( i'm always second...... pfff
hehe thanks! working here to

Edit: for the "fun" of it, i tried "monctrl.exe on" on my monitor(CRT-VGA) when it was on.... i received the classic "this program encountered a problem and need to close" hehe.... I BLAME YOU! :p

I just let mine sleep after 15 min... and an interesting side note, I have two Viewsonic VA1912wb displays, and the damn things simply refuse to turn off by hitting the power button. I can't figure out what the hell the problem with them is, but regardless of how long you hold the power button down, they just turn right back on.... wierd...

Heh, damn you. I never bothered to test that, I only use the standby function. ^^

Ow. I never did like testing.

Oh, and I forgot to say, I turn the monitor off when I'm going to be away for longer than half an hour or so. In fact, I turn the whole computer off.
