The largest theft of personal data ever recorded just got worse. It has been discovered that the hackers had at least 17 months of free reign and the worst part is no one ever noticed.

The 17-month duration appears to be unprecedented among recent large U.S. data thefts involving hackers, according to an Associated Press review of a dozen of the biggest cases over the past four years.

I wonder what the work environment is like in IT and IS?

The places that usually have the worst security from my experience are the once who pinch the pennies.

Security speaking, you usually get what you pay for.

March 29: At least 45.7 million credit and debit card users are at risk following a security breach with the retailer's database. MSNBC.com's Dara Brown reports.

In terms of monetary amounts, I can't even imagine.

You have to figure if this all happened over a year and a half....very scary.

Yea I'm just wondering how much the hackers really made. Yea scary that it they had the access that long.

Good thing I never shopped there......:)

TJ Maxx= Security Not Max..:)

Oh sweet Jesus.

I work at a Citicard call center for credit card support, and ever since January 19th, we've been under the impression that all the hackers gained were account numbers, and that it only affected a couple of million accounts. Since then, we've been nonchalantly moving accounts over to new numbers only if the customers deemed it appropriate, and informing them that it wasn't too big of a deal. I've personally moved over hundreds of accounts, with many, many fraudulent purchases. Now that this news has broken, life at work is gonna be hell.

most companies who arent actively involved in the it business typically have crappy it security. they dont seem to want to acknowledge that computers and such need to be budgeted for on a regular basis.

Account numbers themselves being stolen isn't TOO big of a deal in the credit card world; it happens all of the time. Risk increases exponentially for every other tidbit of personal information stolen in correlation with the numbers, though.

Hmm Lets hope that the IT staff at TJMaxx have their names thoroughly smeared in the industry. I would think after a year that somebody would have noticed something.
