Any takers as to the OCP challenge? Obviously Steve knows, but I checked most of your guys' join dates in this thread they come up lacking.

If you win the challenge I will present a second question, mostly regarding the type of HS/F Kyle was famous for putting on a TNT2. Good luck my friends. Here's a hint: it was also the best HS/F at the time to run your Socket 370, or whoa get this Slocket CPUs with.

was it the alpha? the memory's getting a little fuzzy :p

Just because he read articles here, doesn't make them informative. If you can't see the difference here it's because your middle school English teachers failed. Whatever, don't blame it on him.
It's very simple, or at least I thought it was.

He first rags on the site by saying it hasn't produced an informative article in years and then owns up to the fact that he actually hasn't even been to the site in years, except by 'accident'. So perhaps his original opinion wasn't exactly the most informed.

And it's very arrogant of you to presume that the very first time somebody visited the site they immediately joined the forums. It might surprise you to learn that people visit for years (plural) prior to registering.

I think the last time I went there was about 4-5 years ago to watch their ocing a p4 with liquid nitrogen. (maybe less cant really remember nor do i care too) That was only to see how cool it was, not like temperature cool. I was looking at benchmarks around that time too and noticed that they were mostly done on the same system, or they compared a over clocked amd to a P4, never really impressed me that and their website was difficult to navigate.

Ah ya and I wonder how much Kyle could get for [H] and if he'd share with us. :)

What does this even mean? Seriously?

Exactly.

in the past 2 years, I think i've actually looked at about 4 articles. All of them were the same garbage that they were before the 2 years when I used to read them daily. Every time I read an article, it was like that scene in office space where he's explaining that "Any day you meet me, i'm having the worst day of my life" - Every article was worse than the previous. It got so bad that I just couldn't read them anymore. The few articles I read were because everyone on here was talking about them, or because I was trying to find THEIR review on a product to show to a n00b (like the previously mentioned ECS KN1 review)

to pfc_m_drake.

If something tastes like shit 3 years ago, and 2 years ago, and 2 months ago, .. it probably still tastes like shit, no?

Don't you understand that?

I admit that, it could somehow have ripened, and not taste like shit, but, I'm saying it's unlikely, and I don't feel the need to taste it again to find out.

The "stumbling on the site by accident" is because if you go to the NEWS section of this forum, steve, rich, or whomever, will post a link, that brings you to hardOCP, which then lets you click OUT of hardOCP to get the real article that is written by people who can, for the most part, actually write an unbiased, non ego laden, non preconceptualized article.

You can deflect all you want. It doesn't change the fact that you said that this site was only worth $20-$30, based mainly on your claim that you hadn't read an informative article in years. You then subsequently admitted that you hadn't actually read an article in from the site in years.

Ergo you weren't in a position to make your original claim, and no subsequent commentary/explanations will change that fact. It's very straightforward.

Meh, I never understood where all the hate from THG came from. Personally I like to browse multiple pages, and then average what is said, to get a good understanding about any hardware, software, etc.

I don't understand how you don't understand this

If I shot you in the face 5 years ago, would I need to shoot you in the face again today for you to remember how bad it sucked the first time?

Here's why their reviews SUCK.

Lets take a RANDOM review from the front page. I'll go with the hauppauge tuner on the top

Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950

It's a fact that many good things come on a stick, which includes the WinTV-HVR-950. It's a surprisingly effective USB device that delivers broadcast HD and analog cable television to laptops, with the added bonus of full PVR functionality.

Why is it surprising that it's effective? Hauppauge is the #1 leader in TV Tuner devices, and USB2.0 has plenty of bandwidth to support the needs of TV signal, in fact, I'm running a DUAL HD usb tuner over USB.

They went into this article, as evidenced by the 2ND SENTENCE in the very first paragraph that a "USB TUNER MUST SUCK"

And this is a FAVORABLE review of a product. Now, imagine what happens when they have a product that they really don't like in the first place.. (say, a phantom console), you'll see how clearly their bias is skewed against that product.
\

I think this will spell the death of Tom's Hardware as an enthusiast site. Almost every site I've seen bought up by a big company goes down the drain soon after. I remember the days Sharky Extreme used to be one of the best computer hardware sites out there, then they get bought up by ZDNet and bam the site goes down the drain.

Oh, I understand exactly what happened. And it's not at all as you portray it above. In post #59 of this thread you said:

If you don't count the servers... ~$20-$30
HardForum on the otherhand?
That's the real value. I never go to HardOCP anymore. Haven't read an informative article in years.

That was in response to a question of how much HardOCP might be worth. Then in post #69 (e.g. 10 posts later) you said:

In all fairness, since I don't go to hardOCP.com anymore (unless I'm click-thru-ing on some news post that went to some OTHER site that actually reports halfway decently) I can't truly say that the quality of information in the articles is still sub-par.

So in your own words, as I have pointed out previously, you had no basis for making the claims you did in post #59. It's very clear. And they're all your own words.

id say it is surprisingly effective because its a USB stick, not much larger than an oldish usb flash drive?

Holy cow, this thread got crazy!

Regardless of how you interpret the editorial parts of [H] reviews, you have to look at their tests as well. What other places evaluate to the same extent or further? If I were so unhappy with the [H]'s reviews, I'd be coughing up some links to reviews I found more suitable.

By the way, 100% objectivity is impossible to achieve. It's quite understandable to presuppose that a TV tuner the size of a USB drive (which actually is a USB drive) may not be that impressive. And whaddya know, it's actually a decent device.

I always have and do enjoy the site and it's reviews. The forums too, obviously.
I read THG at the same time I was reading OCP back in the day. I remember the big fiasco over the slot 1 P3 1GHz. THG kind of went downhill from there.

IIRC , It was the 1.13 Ghz model. Intel screwed them over that by not letting them review new products for a long time.

In the end they were proven right and Intel did recall the processors.

Kyle could probally give more insite into this as I remember him being involved in it.

Congratz to Tom!

Yeah, the site is worth a lot. It was way better back in the old days when they were using the Delphi forums (like ten years ago)

Back then, Toms was the only game in town. There were other enthusiast sites, but none came close.

HardOCP? Sure, I'd buy her... Let me check my back pocket.

To Steve: I pretty much stopped reading the site when you were hired as a frontpage news poster =D. I know you don't care, up in Alaska with your hot-rod Cameros. Yeah yeah, you could kick my ass, you bench more then I weigh, you correspond with Asia Carrera, I don't care. Hypothermia is and always was mediocre. Except for the damn Killer Gaming Rigs, those were fucking incredible. I love you for those. Other then that, well lets just say it's kind of love/hate. I'm sure you know what I mean.

If Kyle does read this before this account is banned, post deleted, w/e. Thanks for the page way back in the day. It was a shining beacon of overclocking information in a bleak world wide web. ttfn.

i forgot a B...

the Bias that was being noticed is probably because there always seems to be a long period of time where the is only ONE bleeding edge component for whatever category (Right now, its intel core 2 for CPU's, nV G80 for GPU's ) that have NO competition to speak of...

Talking Overclockers Comparison Page and the Orb?

I'd just like to let CyberDeus-RagDoll know that fighting against the entire [H] forum probably isn't a very good idea. We all enjoy all the articles, and if you can't see how they're informal and helpful, then...I guess you're just kinda dumb. I've yet to find an [H] article I didn't enjoy.

But on subject, I never really went to Toms. I started off on a smaller, now dead (I think) website called Creative-Mods. I joined the [H] as I started hoping PC sites more and just ended up sticking here for the so called "useless" articles.

Look back at the responses to my statement. Not everyone agrees with you. Maybe because you are so easily informed it is because you find them articles to be of quality. Other users (Check other comments) agree with me. Also, like other fools, you still don't understand the distinction between FORUM and OCP

ZenOps seems to agree with me
Ockie agrees with me
Trepidati0n partially agrees with me
Draax agrees with me about the "bias and hate" part, but I can't say he's saying he doesn't like the articles themselves

That is your loss. Toms had some value (as long as patrick wasn't the writer of the article) and, it seems, must still have value, since it was purchased for such a large amount.

Kyle breeds animosity towards people and sites. The sheep (which are 80% of you) just tow the company line. the other 20% of the users here are the real gems. Even though, for example, Ockie and I have butted heads before, I do, actually, value his input. But there are users (and editors) here that I wouldn't trust to turn on my calculator, let alone give me hardware advice, as well.

Kyle, even admits, that he is a hardass.
Computerpoweruser magazine said:
Kyle Bennett is editor-in-chief of HardOCP.com (http://hardocp.com), one of the largest and most outspoken online PC-enthusiast sites on the Web. HardOCP.com is geared to users with a passion for PCs and those who want to get cutting-edge performance from their systems. Beware, though, Kyle is known for his strong opinions and stating them in a no-nonsense manner while delivering some of the most in-depth reviews and PC hardware news on the ‘Net.
Translation. "Kyle knows he's an overbearing ass, and fuck you if you don't like it!"

Actually been here since the 90s myself with an old email account that didnt transfer. Anyway the heatsink? Can't remember the name but it was NOT the orb, as previously stated. It was that square HSF that looked liked stacked aluminum plates.http://www.tennmax.com/BGA_cooler_guide.htm TENMAX Lasagna? I used it on my Elsa Erasor 2 just like the article.

When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of you, and umption. You're in left field. The fact that the performance of something is "surprising" does not necessarily mean that the intial impressions for the item were poor. "Hmm, this golf club looks like it hits the ball well. *whack* Wow, it hits it really well - I'm surprised!"

Bias, favoritism? Those are words associated that have become associated with THG, not [H]. That's why I work here.

Kyle, even admits, that he is a hardass.

Translation. "Kyle knows he's an overbearing ass, and fuck you if you don't like it!"

And this is a crime? If he's right, who gives a shit?

Would you rather him be like Mister Rogers?

Too bad opinions for the most part aren't facts. Kyle isn't the most tolerant guy from what I've seen. =S

your translator is about as bad as the ones i used when i was too lazy to properly translate a few french sentences for grade 6 french

the translation is more along the lines of: Kyle states his opinion clearly and doesnt dick around. i dont know where youre getting over bearing or ass from, maybe your just one of those people that ALWAYS has to be right...

BTW, i only noticed one post by Ockie in this thread... saying "yep" to the OCP challenge posted earlier... far from "on your side" rather neutral seeming actually...

if the site is so bad, just go away.

Again, someone who doesn't understand that www.hardocp.com and www.hardforum.com are different websites.
The point is, when it comes to www.hardocp.com, I DID just "go away"

But Kyle owns both sites...both are provided to you free of charge courtesy of the hard work and sweat of the people you continually insult.

You have no problem standing in the yard (forums) of a man's house (hardocp) screaming like a child what an "overbearing ass" the owner of the house is...but you won't go away. We know the yard (forums) and house (hardocp) are two separate places but they are owned by the same "overbearing ass". I suggest that if the house and its owner are beneath you and your standards...surely you do not need to continually siphon off a free stay in his yard? Unless of course, you really have nowhere else to go?

People (myself included) need to quit responding to this thread.

Deus means god. ;)

Why yes, yes it does.

That's because in my band, i'm the computer god (a nick name people have been laying on me for years) because I'm the one that knows how to do all the stupid little computer stuff. Rag Doll Psychics (which is a play on Ragdoll Physics) is the name of the band.
If other members of my band were forum members, they'd user their names + the band name.

So what if my name has the words "computergod" in a foreign language? Did you know that billy idol used to use that (and cyberpunk) as a nickname? It's just a nickname.

Or do you think Chaos Ninja is really a ninja?

I don't think the analogy is correct.
I think of hardocp.com as kyle's house.
I think of hardforum.com as the autonomous, self running city medical clinic that kyle started, but that runs itself, and is across town.
The thing you don't get steve, is you are also an overbearing ass, and last I heard, you don't live with Kyle, and you don't own his house, or his yard, either. Technically, I have more of a problem with you than Kyle, because, while kyle is "providing" this service, you are just one of his "entourage" that acts like a jerk. You are the turtle to his vince.

BWAHAHAH!!!! have you seen Steve's bunker? think of [H] as a franchised business. [H]Console is Steve's franchise. walk in to the console gaming section, and you are essentially standing on steve's lawn (the lawn analogy is PERFECT. if you are partying, chatting it up with a group of people, your probably in their yard, as cramming a bunch of people into rooms isnt quite as nice as an open space, which smells better too :D )

again, shitting where you eat is a bad idea... do you KNOW how many bacteria there are in your intestines? im surprised you havent collapsed :D

See what I quoted. It pertains.

Or do you think Chaos Ninja is really a ninja?

No. I also don't think he's pretentious.

Can't wait to read more of your jaunty, hard-to-please, problem-with-everyone demeanor.

Maybe it will allow the "reviews" that could be done in 5 pages, but are padded (due in LARGE part to massive amounts of ads) out to 15 pages to be trimmed back to something more realistic? I understand the need for ad revenue and all, but THG apparently doesn't know the meaning of the word excessive.

Buyouts likely mean the need for more revenue to cover the cost of the buyout more quickly, ie, yikes! More ads... :(
