Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

I would guess you can plug a Freeview box into the composite socket on this monitor, using a SCART to composite adapter on the Freeview box. You would need to plug the sound lead into another source, mind.

Where did you take it? BENQ office on Queen street?
Scarborough
Getronics
150 Middlefield Road
Scarborough, Ontario
M1S 4L6

need an RMA # from benQ support first. It's been a week and a day now still no word. benq insisted it must be shipped but getronics had no problem with me dropping it off. Saves a couple days shipping and a major expense.

Many of the retailers in the UK received new stock from Benq this week. I have contacted Ebuyer and Shiroi for some answers to whether they come with the 1:1 pixel mapping update, but to no avail . Has anybody been lucky and received an answer or already received their brand new FP241w?

thx

And if you do, will it stretch to fill the screen but maintain the aspect ratio?

Thanks

From what I've worked out with either a non updated or a updated monitor if you are using a computer the video card will do the mapping for you. So using a 4:3 res (1280x1024) you can tell the video card to display it either as 1280x1024 pixels physically [mapping], stretching keeping it's [aspect ratio] to (would be) 1600x1200 (4:3) or stretching it to [fill] to 1900x1200 (16:10 - which is what this monitor is).

The fix is mainly to do with non computer inputs, eg consoles/DVD players etc through what ever port. with OUT the fix all inputs will be stretched to 16:10 distorting images. WITH the fix, you can choose what you want mapping, aspect or fill as noted above in [ ] 's

Hi all,

Could i have an opinion on which is the best input to use for the XBox 360.Is it VGA or Component? I know its been talked about before on this forum but its that BIG now i could be an OAP before i find it.

Thanks.

for the life of me i see no such option for mapping to 1:1 on the ATI control center, i have looked over and over. Unless this is something specifically nVidia related.

if someone could show me where this might be, i'd be a happy doodie :p

Yes, current ATI driver doesn't have 1:1 function.

Thanks Tranq, that's just what I needed. Might have to shell out for it then...

Make sure to put in the savings code. It showed $15 for the american site for me.

Hi, where and what is the shipping code? I just see the code for the special price. It initially adds $14.99, but when you checkout the price for shipping is like $35.99.
Thanks.

I was about to order this monitor off NCIX. But as of Feb 1st they say they cannot process US credit cards. I just moved so I don't have a paypal address that is certified and I don't really want to deal with that.

Waiting on newegg for firmware updated units or the viewsonic.

They shipped to my paypal address and it wasnt verified.

Just make sure to put in the right shipping info when you send your paypal. Meaning.. make sure your paypal shipping address matches the one you gave them.

Has anyone gotten 15 dollars shipping to the US? I don't think it applies to US orders. At least I couldn't get the code to work so I would get 15 shipping.

Thanks for the info Michael. That's bad.
I did order because of the double confirnment form BenQ as well as from my supplier (having the firmware update).

just an update for all European people.
the information I got was correct. I reveived my benQ yesterday from computeruniverse.net. As distributor & BenQ Germany said, it was including the firmware update :) , manufaction date: December 2006.
However if you think to order you should try to get confirmed getting the last revision (this at least I did).

also my bighness concerns are at ease now. I don't think the monitor is too bright at all, just right ...
I'm coming from an old TFT, so maybe I was used to, but find it really a plus the BenQ brighter then my old TFT.

no humming sounds or lag that I do notice.

also I'm really pleased with design and IQ of the monitor!!!

:D

Actually, I think it says Feb.1 2006, so it's last year. I used Paypal and paid with my credit card through them.

ya i just updated my billing address for my credit card and added that to paypal and that shipping address to paypal. I'm going to try that out.

There is a setting for this in the ATI Catalyst control center :) . I will have to check when I get home where it actually is...but keep looking in the mean time. I just played with it a couple of days ago (I have an ATI 9700pro). By default, mine was in 1:1 mode so any game that change the res appeared in a tiny box on the screen until I turned the setting on to stretch smaller resolutions to fit the screen.

If you open up ATI CCC and go to the Digital Panel Properties > Attributes > Image Scaling and select use centered timings, your aspect SHOULD be 1:1 via PC input only.

Is this true? Which version of drivers? Can you post a picture?

Well I just ordered one from NCIX, as soon as it arrives, this 22" Sceptre I got for Christmas at Costco is going back. I cant' stand the angle viewing on this thing. Pretty nice if you sit up perfectly straight all the time. Can't wait to ditch this TN panel, which still isn't bad for what it cost.

there is nothing anywhere in the ATI CC that says anything about digital panel properties.
brand new 7.1 drivers

i do have it hooked up VGA if that has anything to do with it

ok i found it, you have to be hooked up via DVI, i was hooked up VGA

i fired up quake3 and it had a stretched screen after choosing the centered timings :(

Hi All,
After almost 2 weeks of waiting I finally recieved my monitor from NCIX and it is spectacular. No pictures that I have taken or anyone else on this site has taken do this monitor justice, the quality is just that good. I have just started playing with it, but I thought would put up a few pictures for you guys. I have been having problems with my 8800 gtx and its drivers though, and it is causing issues with 1:1 mapping in games via dvi. When I run my laptop through the vga input, the same game (Civ 4) will map perfectly 1:1. I will try to resolve the issue and post more pictures and a full review this weekend.
For now, enjoy the pictures, and I hope all of you have broadband!
The main files is about 65 megs and the 360 file is about 24 megs.
All were taken at the highest quality and least compression with and 8 megapixel camera.
All pictures have captions describing exactly what they are.
They are all zip files, sorry if it is an inconvenience to anyone.

For Main Files
Link = http://www.mediafire.com/?4zgwddmlzll
Another, but slower link - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=U31CDYPP

For 360 Files
http://www.mediafire.com/?3iyjtmdqjmd

Let me know if the links suddenly stop working, I tested it after upload and all of them worked.
Try the mediafire link first, it is faster.
I also chose to split up the 360 pics from teh rest because I know some of you just want the 360 pics.

All 360 pics taken via componant.
I have taken pictures of the 360 at the resolution page in the dashboard.
480P,720P,1080i, and 1080P - a pic of each resolution at each mapping setting (Eg 1:1, aspect, full) so that it is easier to see the difference.
There are also some pics of Gears of War in there just for fun.
I also took some pics of Civ 4 via dvi at native rez.
And some non native rez pics from my laptops vga. EG(1024 X 768,1280X1024,1600X1200)
I also took some pics of the overall screen realestate of the monitor and I took some showing applications and how much more space you get to work. (Photoshop,Premier,Word,Powerpoint)
Finally, I took some pictures of my N64 hooked up via composite. The 1:1 worked beautifully.
These pictures are not the last ones I will take and if you have another request just pm me. I will be taking more (as time provides - read hopfully this weekend) and of better quality with my better camera.
Also, if anyone would like a RAW (CR2) copy of any photo, just pm me with an email address and i will send it to you.
Enjoy!

Well, I just ordered it from NCIX. A bit rich for my blood but that's what credit cards are for. Hopefully I wont regret it. That's my first LCD, currently using a 19" Samsung 900NF.

I hope you guys arent buying *on credit*. You should never pay a cent of interest... always pay by the grace period.

Anybody,
Xbox 360, VGA or Component connection. Which is best to use?

I prefer component, as VGA still looks washed out and muted to me despite playing around with the settings on the monitor a bit. However, I have found that on occasion games will be a little dark using the component inputs...but that's generally solved by ratcheting up the in-game brightness or gamma settings a touch.

There also seems to be a difference in sharpness, especially noticeable when reading text. The component input to me makes text overly sharp, so much so that it looks jagged when you're up close, regardless of the monitor's sharpness setting. Conversely, the VGA input seems to blur text, and everything in-game looks a little blurrier compared with component. Honestly, the difference isn't that noticeable except on the dashboard, and if you sit a fair distance from your monitor when playing, I would suggest that the sharpness provided by component would be preferable. In any case, I'll put up with a bit of jaggedness to get better colours any day.

In the end, of course, it's really personal preference. I'm sure others here might have an opinion that's completely different from mine. So if you have access to both cables, just give them a try and see which one you prefer. If you bought the premium system you'll already have component cables, so I wouldn't bother spending the money (like I did :() to get the VGA cable. On the other hand, you might want to leave your component inputs open for a Gamecube or a Wii or something similar. It's really up to you.
