I'm interested in the use case here... Just using hadoop to host hdfs for file storage or will you be doing processing on hadoop?
The project I'm currently on was an early adopter of Hadoop (we've been using it for about 4.5 years now.) Since our need was computational as well as storage our...
agreed, and I do like the notion of using dd to provide a quick test if everything is "working". I've frequently used it as a troubleshooting tool (found my way around the nasty Intel 945 SATA chipset in linux issues with it).
I am definitely reading that ZFS is "different", it was almost...
from the 10,000 ft view, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The devil can be in the details and IMO dd alone is a pretty poor benchmark tool. Great for showing an IMMEDIATELY apparent problem but I'd love to see something done with Iometer, filebench or even Bonnie++. In fact, I will be looking to...
I'll be following this thread as I've been really interested in ZFS and it looks like 4K drives are the future in the larger capacities.
Any plans to use a real benchmarking tool beyond just dd?
I really dislike the fact that manufacturers are now making folks ante up for enterprise class drives even with a SOHO raid array. crap like this wouldn't even be necessary if error rates haven't gotten out of control over the past 3-4 years.
Now I am severely unamused.
yeah raid is really a necessity for me. Mind you, different data on the drive has different levels of importance and much of it is replicated in its original storage medium but there is a lot of time invested in transferring the data to disk.... (the argument of spending time transferring it to...
I should add that going with non 2tb options are interesting as I have two goals here:
#1, control costs in drive selection. 3 years ago I paid approx 129-139 per drive, I'd like to pay the same now.
#2. I need at least 8TB of usable space so that I won't need to upgrade my storage for...
So, I've been around here for a LITTLE while, don't post much here as I spend most of my time elsewhere but I do lurk...
That out of the way, I've got a fileserver setup with a 2ghz pentium-D on a supermicro PDSLA mobo and a highpoint 2320 8 port raid card....
I put this system together...
array got a ton of work over the weekend when i had a friend over for some LAN action. I store my isos there and mount via daemon tools vs actually burning things. So multiple boxes installing stuff from the array via gigabit and it remained solid. Still not sure why I'm only getting around...
After flashing the bios on the card about 100 times, it seems my config change finally took hold. The box is up and running. Now the trick will be to see if the array is still online when I get home this evening.
Ran HDTach through the drive (the free version so write only), I'll put up a...
Seems the issue with my server not posting now is related to int13/reallocate ebda. No matter what I do with the flash utility on this card it won't update those settings. Sweet!
So far I give this card a -5 out of 10. I might just break it in half and investigate replacement options.
Finally received my card back from newegg. Plopped the card back in the box, flashed the BIOS to 1.04, supposedly disabled reallocated ebda and int13 support (so the box would actually boot an OS) then shut the machine back down and plugged the array in. Now I'm basicaly back to square one, the...
Pretty sure it aint the power supply. At this point the card is no longer being detected. It is a 600w power supply, no video card is loaded in this system and it contains 6 drives, total. Should be well within the limits of the power supply.
I've finally been told to pursue RMA. I'm...
They've finally sent me a diagnostic utility to run.... not sure how that is going to work out since the card is not being detected anymore but i'll humor them... Perhaps the utility can enumerate all pci-e devices and dump the output to screen or something.
I'm in the process of addressing things with Highpoint support. They responded to my email at 10pm on Christmas eve, so I'm thinking perhaps they are offshore. Pretty commendable english in the email, but they asked me information I had already presented in the initial email (motherboard/drive...
I recently built what I thought was a pretty nice fileserver:
Coolermaster Stacker 810 case
Supermicro PDSLA 945G board (I'm utilizing the onboard video, could be important later..)
3ghz PentiumD
2GB corsair xms memory
5x 500gb seagate 7200.10 drives
IcyDock 5 bay drive enclosure...
So I've noticed that Highpoint has a fairly short list of supposed "compatible" motherboards for the 2320 raid card. I'm soon to have a spare pentium d 930 that I was going to throw in a Intel G965 based board for use as a fileserver. I know several people over here run the 2320's, im just...
thanks for the suggestions, I was looking at the stacker, with that hard drive cage (mainly for the supplemental cooling it provides). Noise isnt' a concern, my "servers" are all in a closet right now and will soon be relocated to the basement (primarily for heat concerns, it can get pretty warm...
So after losing one of my 250GB drives in my current file server I have decided I need to put together a more robust solution utilizing RAID5. I'd like to go with 2x80gb drives in raid1 (off mobo based controller) to store OS and program files and then a RAID5 array of 6 400GB drives off an...
I too am looking for an SN95 around xmas but my intention was to run an overclocked 3200+ in it, but after closer examination of kyle's review, he noted overclocking problems as well as problems with samsung optical drives (newegg has a dual layer samsung for 57 bucks right now).....
Other...
I need 128MB sticks of low density pc133 memory (should be 16 chips not 8 on the pcb)
and 128mb sticks of registered or non registered ECC pc100 memory....
reason im looking here is any new sticks of pc133 will be high density and wont work in what I need them for (think BX chipset era ram)...
