I had some slow IOGear units that worked flawlessly for a couple years. I upgraded to faster NetGear units and they worked, but had to be unplugged and plugged back in to reconnect every couple months (this seems to be true of everything NetGear I've ever touched).

I believe my model of C6100 (TY3) has traces on the boards for USB, but no socket preinstalled. Someone on STH forums soldered one on successfully. There are also at least 2 models, maybe more of C6100, fwiw. XS23-SB, XS23-TY3, and possibly a newer one Dell is/was selling.

No support contract? I know that I had issues once and they had me replace the stats tables with defaults from the installer, if I recall correctly. This of course killed historical stats, but they were fubar anyway.

In C6100s there is some flexibility. I believe there were different initial configurations, but the most common is 3 drives per node. Moving to 6 drives connected to 2 nodes is as easy as moving a SAS cable, iirc. Putting more than that on one node required an add-on controller, also iirc.

Sounds like you're trying to use the free version of Veeam. I like Veeam, but the free version doesn't support any scheduled or incremental backups and you need to have licensed (or demo) ESXi to use it.
