Upgrade current gaming system or buy z600 to learn esxi/center?

Try to install ESXi on it now. If you get storage and NIC support and ESXi installs, grab the 32GB of RAM (and maybe a bigger SSD) and run with it for now. If not, then your first lab exercise is figuring out how to add driver support for those devices. Until you get more experience with...

IBM M5015 - poor performance with ESXi 6

I cut open the battery pack on my M5015. There's a Sony LiIon battery that would be easily replaced for about 10 bucks, but there's also a circuit board with ten or so ICs. Might be worth trying a new battery, but I'd guess the ICs store some info on the battery state and it's not going to be...

IBM M5015 - poor performance with ESXi 6

I've got one of these with a dead battery I set up with ESXi6 a few days ago and so far all it's done is crash the UnityVSA VM I'm trying to run on it due to latency. I'd be curious how feasible it'd be to make a homemade battery replacement. The battery has four leads, not sure what they all...

Exam prep tips for VCP5 certification

There's nothing gray about using braindumps. Do you want to pass the exam based on your own skills, or do you want to cheat your way through it? That's your choice to make. Go over the blueprint, rate your confidence with each topic on a scale of 1-5. Review the topics where you feel you...

    Physical to Virtual to Physical

What about: 1) Throw the new RAID controller in the system, configure your RAID10 2) Use Windows Disk Management to create an OS based R1, where one "disk" is your existing R1 and the second is your new R10 array (if the motherboard is doing this pre-OS). If it's doing it in the OS, add the...

    tablets for early childhood education

(Note: it's been about 12-18 months since I've worked closely with managing iPads, so my info is hopefully out of date and the situation has improved) Chromebooks took me about 10% of the time to manage as do iPads, despite us having 10x more of them. Chromebooks with the management console...

    Veeam issues with VSS

Is the VSS error related to preparing the guest, or specific to Exchange? If the former, you could try increasing the timeout more. Something must've changed on the system to cause it to fail with a 41 minute timeout (2500000ms) whereas it used to work before with the default 15. I have one...

    VCP5-DCV Certification Renewal?

If you do that, then (presumably) you're going to have to take another qualifying VCP course and incur that expense.

    VCP5-DCV Certification Renewal?

Yeah, your instructor wasn't lying - VMware was. My non-expiring cert expires in May as well. I hope v6 software and exams are out in enough time that I don't have to recert on 5.

    vSphere 6 released today!

I thought it was a bit of a snoozer myself. I don't use FT anywhere, and more vCPUs won't change that. Despite them repeatedly beating the " hypervisor is not a commodity" drum, this release just illustrated to me that we're getting there, except perhaps for the largest environments...

    VMUG Advantage EVALExperience

I'd be disappointed if it wasn't at six sockets (3x2). Though, if you have a yearly license for one host, you could at least keep your vCenter and "primary" host live for a year and rebuild the other hosts with evaluation licenses when needed. Not sure if that'd be in violation of licensing...

    Esxi issue

The recommendations I've seen have been to go to VMXNET3, not 2. If VMXNET NICs are working, I'd leave them be. They should be better performing than E1000 anyway. Upgrading the hosts should resolve the issue. I've had E1000 PSODs at a few sites. Hasn't reoccurred (yet) since the hosts were...

What to do when wireless channels are saturated?

Yeah, buy 5GHz cards for the laptops. Trying to do anything with 2.4GHz is going to a waste of time and an exercise in frustration. You should be able to get them for like $20.

    Networking w/ Powerlines

I had some slow IOGear units that worked flawlessly for a couple years. I upgraded to faster NetGear units and they worked, but had to be unplugged and plugged back in to reconnect every couple months (this seems to be true of everything NetGear I've ever touched).

    Hyper-V vs VMware

Awesome, looking forward to this. I've used vSphere for years and have been meaning to get more experience with Hyper-V so that I can give our clients the best objective information (and continue to work on stamping out XenServer ;) ).

Private school on a budget: What model NAS works for this usage?

Why are you using SAN storage in the first place? You didn't mention a vCenter server (unless it's physical), so I'm guessing your three hosts are standalone and you aren't really making used of any shared storage features (HA, vMotion, etc.). If you're not doing HA and SAN support is keeping...

(stupid?) Question assigned from college Cisco course

There's nothing unusual or ridiculous about this question. It's a bog standard CCNA subnetting question. Telling your supervisor to "sit on it" and requesting a /16's worth of space for 108 nodes would be ridiculous. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but my first step would be to relax...

    HP 1810-8G v2 vs Netgear ProSAFE GS108T

Fixed configuration just means it doesn't have ports where you can plug in SFPs (Small Form Factor Pluggable Transceivers) or other modules. If you're not going to be using fiber SFPs, then it doesn't matter to you. Both switches are "fixed configuration" in this regard. Sounds like you've...

    Recover Data after multi-pass wipe/zeros?

I've only heard of this kind of recovery being done on very old (MFM, <1GB, probably <100MB) harddrives. If anyone has documentation on it being done on newer generations of drives, I'd be curious to see it.

How best to deploy 24 new hosts?

I believe Autodeploy traditionally meant stateless by definition. Per this, 5.1 added stateful autodeploy installs. More info. Have never used it, so correct me if I am wrong. Do you have Enterprise Plus licensing? If not, that is going to limit your options.

4+ Node Servers -- How do they share disks?

I believe my model of C6100 (TY3) has traces on the boards for USB, but no socket preinstalled. Someone on STH forums soldered one on successfully. There are also at least 2 models, maybe more of C6100, fwiw. XS23-SB, XS23-TY3, and possibly a newer one Dell is/was selling.

vCenter SQL DB grew 100 GB in 10 days

No support contract? I know that I had issues once and they had me replace the stats tables with defaults from the installer, if I recall correctly. This of course killed historical stats, but they were fubar anyway.

4+ Node Servers -- How do they share disks?

In C6100s there is some flexibility. I believe there were different initial configurations, but the most common is 3 drives per node. Moving to 6 drives connected to 2 nodes is as easy as moving a SAS cable, iirc. Putting more than that on one node required an add-on controller, also iirc.

As a VMware VSPP where do you make your most money

With the efficiencies generated by the cloud coupled with the reduced need for internal support, it seems like a reduced...

What to look for in Used Rackmount Servers on eBay?

VMware sockets vs cores and Co-Stop

This article may be of use. Based on it, I believe that more sockets vs more cores per socket will provide better performance, but it may be negligible in some or most cases or depend on your specific configurations. Probably a bigger concern when you are configuring VMs with more than a few...

    what's your virtualization training budget?

I work for an MSP. We have no training budget. I paid for ICM and VCP out of my own pocket. For that kind of projcet, I'd push pretty hard for training. Probably not ICM though (at least not by itself), something VDI specific. Even if you only learn one useful thing in the training that...

    ESXi 5.x VM Backups

Sounds like you're trying to use the free version of Veeam. I like Veeam, but the free version doesn't support any scheduled or incremental backups and you need to have licensed (or demo) ESXi to use it.

Considering C1100 for vmware (vsphere) at home

You can reconfigure the cabling in the C6100s to change the number of of disks per server (but not arbitrarily). IIRC, moving 6 to one sled just requires moving a cable. I've seen people do all 12 on one, but it required some customization. I use an external box for storage so I never dug too...

Considering C1100 for vmware (vsphere) at home

Look at the C6100 if you haven't already. Tons of information on www.servethehome.com (may be temporarily unavailable) and their forums. Mine was $800 for 4 machines, 8 L5520s, and 96GB of RAM. 2U fans means it's not as loud. Some people replace the fans with quieter units, but I didn't...
