Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

Any specific settings to change in the Developer options?

I always keep Animations to 1, as I like the smooth fluid look it gives, and going to 0.5 seems too fast or weird.

Anything else to change?
I always enable USB debugging and authorize computers I use to it. If the phone screen is ever inoperable then you can use scrcpy to control the device. There are some pretty cool apps that work without root using Shizuku.

What happened to the Gboard setting to make the keyboard taller or shorter?
The preference setting you are seeking to locate was located in previous versions of Gboard.
It was titled "Keyboard height" and it looked like this.

Finding the Keyboard height setting and changing your keyboard height with a simple click was intuitive.
However, on Oct 2, 2023 Gboard was updated to version 13.4.07.559388404.
In this latest version of Gboard you will no longer find that setting located in Preferences.
Now you have to click on an odd looking icon that looks like this, and select a newly named setting titled "Resize"

After you click on "Resize" you then have to fiddle with a resizing rectangle that looks like this.

Have fun..

Placing that setting in Preferences is intuitive, correct?
And being able to change your keyboard height with a simple click is also intuitive, correct?

But wait, we are not done yet. After you click on "Resize" you then have to fiddle with a resizing rectangle that looks like the following.

Wow, uh ok. Thanks

Pulled the trigger on the Pro
Got the phone, unpacked and I am impressed. The screen is light years away from regular 7. It feels a significant upgrade. Not sure if I would be impressed if I would have gotten the regular 8. But hell yeah I am keeping it.

The phone UI is so smooth and the Material Design is a cool look.

The gestures are just so good, it's a fun phone to use.

I have to say I really like my 8 Pro. It's just comfortable and I like Material UI, and how the gestures and navigating the OS is.

It seems like a bigger upgrade from the 7 Pro. The nice flat screen and better [H]ardware seem more evident, it's just a better overall phone no question. This isn't just a side - grade to me. But it's not night and day better, no phone is nowadays, but it's a decent upgrade still.

I'm very pleased with the screen. That alone is worth the upgrade to me. However, Android 14 seems a bit quirky. A few of my apps, like YouTube and BN-Link (smart outlets), crash fairly often. Never happened on previous versions of Android. It's nothing that makes me want to return my phone, but it gets a little annoying.

Love the minimalist UI in Android

I am debating to jump to a 8 pro... from my regular 6. I bought my 6 used and honestly I could probably make it 1 more generation but I got the itch. mainly want it for better battery life, screen for outdoor use and camera in the front. Is the 8 pro worth it over the standard 8

I upgraded from the Pixel 7 to the Pixel 8 and it feels like a bigger upgrade than when i went from pixel 6 to pixel 7 last year. I'd recommend it and if you can get the pre-order deals where you get either the watch or pixel buds pro. The pixel buds pro are really nice as well. I find them to be similar in sound and fit to my Sony Linkbuds S earbuds. Transparency mode feature where when you start talking and it stops your music and turns on the microphones so you can hear the person you are talking to works very well. The Pixel 8 also does not get as warm as my pixel 7. I can also feel the difference of the screen refresh rate 90hz vs 120hz.

Did the same - upgraded from a Pixel 7 Pro to a Pixel 8 Pro + free Pixel 2 watch. While not a massive upgrade, I feel the improved screen, cameras (which are already amazing) and a bit better performance/battery life will be worth it.

I would jump on the 400$ no strings attached deal with Google Fi. already have a pair of pixel bud pros and galaxy watch 5 pro (mainly for battery life) or 300$ for the regular 8.

I've heard there's a big battery difference in the display size settings full resolution vs. high resolution

If so? Is there a big image quality difference going to the lower res?

I am liking the pixel 8 so far, moved from my old 4A5g and can see the difference in screen. Phone seems smaller over all but heavier than old , mainly do to old build being plastic.
Screen size is same size to old as well.
I just set it up Friday so only a few days playing with home on weekend so real world use starts Monday when i stream xmradio for 6 hours at work.
I will give updates on battery life, that is my main concerns with 120hrz display on.

I've been running full rez since Friday but haven't noticed any serious battery drain... at least not yet. Probably need to give it about a week to see if Adaptive Battery adjusts/optimizes draw before I can say with any certainty.

As for display/image quality, I like as much screen real estate as possible. I always set text and display to the smallest settings. Full rez makes everything look even sharper. (y)

Yeah, Android 14 has had some more app crashes than I saw before the update on my P5 at least. Usually in Chrome browser lately. Youtube has had a reoccurring bug for several months though where when I open it, the UI is glitched out and a glitched UI segment is only visible at the top left of the display, which I can see more easily when I open the app switcher to force close it so I can open a fresh instance again. I've seen this on my wife's P6Pro as well, so I know it's not my phone and it's funny the same bug hasn't been patched already in almost a year I'd say at this point.

I run a Garmin (Forerunner 965 now) for my watch since I run and cycle a lot, and have the Linkbuds S buds as well, and would be surprised if the Pixel Buds are nearly as small and lightweight as the Linkbuds. I got them because of how small they are to cut down on wind noise while I'm cycling, since the more the buds are exposed, the more wind hits them and causes noise. But lately they've been acting up and the left bud has to constantly be readjusted for it to register touch input for some reason, and the other day my case just died temporarily and wouldn't charge or charge my buds either (no LED activity whatsoever on the case). But after a few hours it decided to work again, so it seems to be on the fritz and I opened a warranty claim on them to Sony. Sometimes I wish I could disable touch input completely too like when I'm in the rain and they freak out, or need to adjust the buds with gloves on and keep accidentally inputting commands. I had a set before this too that blasted prolly 100+ Db squealing into my right ear randomly, but that was within the store return window and I exchanged them a the store for another set. So all this to say I may be interested in replacing them with something else if the Buds Pro are actually a suitable replacement for my use case.

I'm curious about the Pixel 8's display settings; does it let you set 90Hz as a nice balanced setting for smoothness and battery life? Switching between my Pixel 5 and wife's 6 Pro, I don't see enough of a difference in smoothness to matter to me and would keep it at 90Hz if given the option.

I think I'm still waiting to see what deals are available for BF or later on these, the S23, and Zenfone 10. Ideally I can spend $600 or less on one of these soon since my P5 is about done for software updates unfortunately. :(

Either my eyes are getting worse as I mature, or the Pixel 8 Pro is extra tiny in the default font size? Do you all keep it at the microscopic tiny default font size, or do you change it?

Went back to a simple home screen.

Or do you like the themed version better?

I also got the Hazel Pixel 8 for my Wife, but she's been so busy with work and kids activities she doesn't want me switching her phone out at the moment. So I've been playing with it, got this cool looking grippy case for it;

And man, the smaller size of this phone, and this very comfortable feeling case, makes this little Pixel 8 a joy to hold. It's a very easy phone to grasp and use easily. I've had the Pro or Max or Plus sized phones for years now, I forgot how nice a "small 6.2" screen" feels LOL I might even put my SIM in there and use it for a day, should I or no?

Do IT!!

Help me decide is the 8 Pro is worth it. Speakers? Any better to match these new spectacular displays?

TBH it doesn't feel all that different than my 6 Pro in daily general usage... Maybe a bit faster, smoother, I suppose. The 6 Pro that went to my wife is a huge upgrade from her Moto G Power, though. Dramatically so.

RE: having the smaller Pixel 8 for my Wife I've been playing with. I really love the smaller more comfortable size, but everything else is just better on the 8 Pro.

Display is sharper / clearer / brighter, the colors pop more, and just overall nicer.

Haptics feel better

The 8 Pro just feels like a more premium phone. But man the size of the 8 is amazing.

The Google store trade in values for P6 and 7 went to total shit and it's actually a disgrace to dump the phone for that amount of money.

Trade in at Best Buy. I got $550 for my 7 Pro 128GB vs. $420 offered by the Google Store.
