Well I just recieved my 7000B-AlCu LED HSF and before ordering it I checked with zalmans site to see if it would work. Didnt see my board anywhere on their list "MSI KT6V" and so I ordered anyways.

Got it today and there are no mounting holes and I really want this HSF so I started looking into a new board. I have been an MSI user for many years and have no idea what to look into.

My only find that I found somewhat suited for me is a DFI NF2 U400 S-AL Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard. Never heard much about DFI bit i know that the chipset is good. would that board be worth it or should I just save up and get a 754 board thats MSI and a new CPU?

DFI socket a boards (LanParty series, et al) have proven to be nice enthusiast boards.
 
Proud former owner of a LanParty nForce2 Ultra B, highly recommended. A fan for life, I sold the nForce2 to get the LanParty UT nForce3 for my Athlon64.
 
I don't want to start a flamewar, but I'm going to have to stand behind the LanParty. Put it this way: either one is a great board, as is the A7N8X. You can't go wrong with any of these.
 
Personally i'd go with the LanParty. Asus can't hold voltage very well cause they use cheap components as opposed to the LanParty which is geared towards overclockers.

Only thing i find amusing bout the A7N8X is that it talks to you.

I owned both an A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 and a LP Ultra B...the B was better at OCing my mobile.

Another person wrapped up in the marketing of the Zalman 7000 for AMD, sorry to see it happen again.
 
It's not just the mounting holes. In the picture you posted, the fins on the flower will interfere with the northbridge heatsink. The other DFI NF2 boards have the chipset shifted off to the corner of the socket, rather than along one side. It gets a little bit more distance and clearance this way.
 
See if you can find the infinity version of the board.

All the good of the LanParty but without the bling.
 
i have used a NF7-S rev. 2.0
i have used a A7N8X rev 2.0
i am using a lanparty NF II ultra B.

of the three, i was by far the happiest using the NF7-S. it showed good manufacturing and QC practices. it was not buggy. it OCed decently well.

my lanparty, on the other hand, does not OC at all, the soldering work looks like hell, there is at least one SM componend that directly bridges pins of a mosfet to ground (rather than having a trace to it and routing it properly), it has displayed tonnes of bugs in the time that i have owned it, and the chipset requires over-volting to work properly at stock 200 FSB.

other people have had great experiences with DFI boards, but my own experiences have been terrible, and i do not reccomend them to anyone.
 
i have a zalman 7000 alcu on my abit AN7

i know according to zalman the mobo is incompatible, but all i had to do was bend one of the retenton arms in closer to the heatsink and it works great.

Oh and put the mounting brackets on the reverse side of the CPU.

i think i might try the DFI and bend the capacitors a bit or rise the ACUALL HSF up a bit...

that northbridge heatsink doesnt worry me at all when i can clip it down a bit

Care to explain what exactly you mean by that? AMD is a viable choice for a processor, and if you're looking for a nice quiet HSF that is easy to install, Zalman works wonders.

To the OP: the Zalman 7000 series of coolers all exceed AMDs recommended weights for a cooler. While many people have and do use the 7000 series cooler on Socket A boards, be damn careful when you're moving your computer to avoid damaging the mobo. Also, coolers that exceed AMDs recommended weights occasionally bend the mobo, so that's something that you'll want to watch for. I don't know if you'll have a problem with bending, as you're only 138g over the recommended weight for a cooler, but it still is something that you'll want to take into consideration when actually using this cooler.

I've explained this in various threads, and I actually base it on recorded proof rather than speculation and marketing, I own not one but TWO of them.

1.) the 7000 was never intended for any other platform other than 478 until later on it's production where it was given no revision outside of mounting mechanisms
2.) On Socket-A this is proved easily by the lack of boards that will actually run it, and a good majority of the boards SUPPORTED do not even have the full core covered! (Example: Epox 8RDA)
3.) The pentium 4 is the ONLY chip that has it's heatspreader fully covered, A64's of various varieties have their heatspreader exposed to give off the minimal amount of heat, stuck in the dead zone of the fan, no less. (I realize only the die needs to be covered, scientifically, but the A64FX I have will overheat with the zalman full-tilt with the slightest voltage bump where-as my current heatsink [Thermalright XP-120] takes the maximal voltage with much better temps than what the zalman did at full-speed stock)
4.) The 7000-series is marketed as being the wonderfully silent alternative to silent fans... this is NOT the case and the actual read-out was closer to 38db than it was to 30db, I validified this by the fact that I could hear my computer down the HALLWAY!
5.) The 7000-series is also grossly overpriced compared to it's competition

Anyone looking for quiet IS NOT going to be running the thing at full voltage. Its even packaged with fan mate to slow down the fan. At 5v and below, this is an ~ULTRA~ quiet HSF. I specifically built a rig to be sub 15dBa, and used this HSF. It sounds like a hairdryer when at full voltage, but it's dead silent at around 4v.

Even at it's lowest settings it's still the loudest thing in my entire room

dont forget that along with what materical the case is made of you also may need to consider weather it could be the PSu making the noise or the design in which the fans throw airflow thru the case. this HSF IS proven to be silent when properly equiped it just varies from user to user and case and what you have in it ....and so forth

My PSU is dead-silent, I've modded it to make sure that it was.
I don't like noise, at all, this is why I am concerned to get a 7000.

I find that EXTREMELY hard to believe, if not an outright fabrication. :eek:

A 7000Alcu is sitting right next to me right now, running at around 4v, and it is silent.
and by silent, I don't mean pretty quiet, I mean _silent_ as in, below the ambient sound level in the room (and I live out in the 'burbs, not the city). Not sure what you're hearing, but it's sure not this HSF when running at low voltage.

You either purchased a faulty one, don't have a clue what you're talking about, or are full of shit. I've got both a Zalman on my CPU and on my video card and together they're quieter than my power supply fan.

schpanky, you have good points, all the things you say are true, but you're forgetting one thing. it cools pretty damn well. go look look for my thread on the newark in the amd forum. that was with a zalman 7000a-cu. load temps haven't gone over 40c yet :eek:
 
Err, CNPS7000's dont make much audible noise at all. They are less than whisper-quiet, noisewise. You have to put your ear by it to hear it.
 
i am going to be different.. abit an7.. it just was introduced too late and everyone was already on the nf7 train.. but supposedly the an7 is an improvement on the nf7. blah.. spent.. i wouldn't get socket a though... no reason to anymore. unless you get some cheap used one..
 
well I am considering now weather to give the abit an7 a try or move up and go 754 socket since the zalman works well with that socket as well. opinions/feedback please on weather to try a new board or give socket 754 a try

im not a hardcore gamer and for the most part a multimedia person *PS and dvdtoOGM and fileserving is what i do* and for the most part im not going sempron ever again after this last cpu... so im sticking with the athlons.

I LOVE SILENT/LOW NOISE :D

My only concern with the AN7, based merely on screenshots of the motherboard, is that the socket is right up at the very top edge. If you've got a power supply or the top of the case directly above that area, you aren't going to have enough room to mount it.
