I agree, iTunes on Windows should be an embarrassment to Apple honestly. I'm sure on OSX it's great, but even on a powerful Windows machine it's garbage. I said it before and I'll say it again, hire the developers who did the Zune software.
 
Yeah it still sucks. Looks nice while sucking though, similar to other Apple products. Making it a pain in the balls to use your hardware and/or media with anything else also assists in adoption.
 
Clementine is an excellent "media-library" style player, while still being open source and light on requirements. Check it out at www.clementine-player.org . Lots of great features and probably the best open source "media center" type player around on Windows (Unless you count Amarok 2.x.x for Windows which is considerably more buggy and has more issues than on Linux). It has really made lots of progress in coming to its full 1.0 release (ie. full iPhone support and MusicBrainz/CDDB integration, plus "premium mode available" for Spotify/GrooveShark/SkyFM and other internet radio stations, can grab art/info from Amazon and elsewhere, milkdrop/winamp visualizations etc..)

MediaMonkey (gold) is not open source, but its another good "media-library" type player. Used to have more features than Clementine but these days, Clementine has really caught up though MediaMonkey may still be more polished. Works well and supports Winamp legacy visualizations and some skins.

Audacious is a "winamp-like" music player, coming from XMMS open source heritage. Lots of great features, but more minimalist (think Winamp2 or Winamp5 ) than the big "media library" players. Works on Windows too and supports both plugins/skins made for Winamp and XMMS. Large plugin availability.

QuodLibet is another lightweight open source player, written in Python and with compiled binaries for Windows use, like Audacious.

Edit: I almost forgot "Nightingale", the open source fork of Songbird that actually continued work on Linux and brought the desktop variant back to life. If you liked Songbird before it stagnated as some decided to concentrate on facebook/appstore crap, Nightingale is the way to go and still shares code back to Songbird.

Winamp is still in development and, if you can get by the ads, it still reminds you of that program from long ago that made listening to CD quality music on the PC easy.

AIMP3 - A Russian Winamp clone of sorts for Windows, but known to be of quality. Latest versions can be found on the Russian language version of the page. Aesthetically pleasing and skinned well, can use lots of stuff designed originally for Winamp.

There are more out there, but I tried to eliminate those that either lacked features, compatibility, ease of use, etc.... I urge you to give them a try! If you're (on Windows) looking for an iTunes-like medialibrary player, I urge you to try Clementine. If you're looking for something more minimalist, try Audacious instead (or QuodLibet)!

Just installed Clementine, it is very nice, especially for radio, comes pre-configured with Soma which is my favorite radio url. Thx.
 
Just tried clementine, its good, but I still feel it's got a long way to media monkey. Media monkey's control and customizability is pretty awesome, especially over larger collections, which clementine lacks atm. The free version is more than good enough for most folk. The gold only comes in handy when you want to use niche features.
 
Media Monkey tags all your files in the comments section and it used to crash on me. Maybe they fixed the crash bugs because that was a long time ago since I used it. I'm going to use that Clementine as my main music player now but still have AIMP and foobar installed. Foobar is very handy for doing certain file operations that other media players can't do. I put AIMP directly on my external HDD with all my MP3s in portable mode so it can be used from any PC.
 
EAC>FLAC>Foobar>mp3(using LAME encoder, typically V0 for highest VBR)-its been so long since I've set this up I'd have to research everything all over again since I can't remember all the details :eek:
 
I use foobar, but customizing it to my visual preference was quite complicated. However, it works great once set up and running.
 
I have a Jriver MP3 player. It is good quality but is big and heavy. I didn`t buy it and it was given to me. It is not what I would personally choose as an MP3 player though just because it is big and heavy.
 
I use EAC->FLAC->Foobar2000 (VBR V0 / MP3Tag)
My music is on my server all organized by folder, so no need for jukebox, but when using jukebox style I used j.river as well
 
WinAMP for me. Main reason is it's just been my favored player for the last 14 years, never had a reason to switch to anything else. Second favorite would be Foobar.
 
I recently discovered the Maiko wasapi output for winamp- wow, I am floored. Bit-perfect playback with actually working gapless in winamp? really? hell yeah!

oh and milkdrop 2.24 is completely amazing
