Yet another "recommend some upgrades" thread

With my Christmas money + some Black Friday rebates that will be here soon + my tax return I should have $200 or so to upgrade my system. The thing is that right now I can't see a clear upgrade path that will get me anything but incremental gains in the gaming department.

However it's been a while since I've dug deep into the tech reports and seen what's what. So here's the question: given $200, is there a way to make the followng computer perform noticeably better?* The main games I play right now are CounterStrike: Source, City of Heroes, and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. All three work out the system to its current limits, at least in the CPU and videocard areas. Anyway, here's the system specs:

* AMD 2600 Barton @ 2.00 GHz
* 1 GB crappy Kingston 2700 RAM
* ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
* Windows 2000 Professional


* I'm not talking about "convert everything to PCI-E for $800" or "this component will improve your gaming performance by 2.5%". I'm looking for a cheap upgrade that will yield noticeable in-game results.
 
I would buy a copy of Windows XP to be honest with you.
I don't see anything you could do for $200 to get a really good noticable upgrade other than a new video card, and for $200 a Radeon 9800 works just fine.
 
New ram get pc3200 definatly. Windows 2000 Professional is run on the same logic as XP. Forget XP upgrade your ram and wait for longhorn.

I have a hard time believing that the difference between 1GB of PC2700 RAM and 1GB of PC3200 RAM is going to be amazingly noticeable. Anyone else think that the RAM idea is a good one? I just don't see it helping that much.
 
i say keep ur money and save up.

u dont need a new os

i was gonna tell u to get a amd athlon 3000+ winchester and oc it but them u need a new motherboard. u could get the best cpu that ur motherboard can handle but ur cpu isnt really dragging u down imo.

and if u dont upgrade ur cpu why get new memory

i say save up bout $800-$1000 and replace all of those parts (but the os untill longhorn comes out)
