Howdy.

I'll try to keep it brief.

I'm looking to replace my again Dell P1110 (21" 1280x1024x100HZ CRT). My constraints are 1680x1050 resolution, 22", I got 4870x2 CF to run it.

I have searched this forums and the internet and I'm struggling to come up with one decent review/comparacment of 22" screens thats not 2-3 years old. In last 2-3 years there have been 2 new technologies - LED backlight and 120HZ screens.

-Is this LED backlight all that great ?
-i'm seeing mixed reviews of the 120HZ technology. The reason i stayed away from LCD screens up until now (for gaming purposes) is because of the 60Hz limit - my eye can clearly tell 100hz vs 85hz, vs 60hz. But reading the reviews I dont really get it some say this 120HZ is BS and it's really only 60HZ

I can get samsung 2233rz locally, it's reasonable expensive, I believe there's also a viewsonic 120HZ model which is even more expensive.

-My question sis, do I really want this LED backlight technology ? and
-Is this 120HZ really that good (i"m not intending to buy nvidia glasses and use it in 3d anytime soon)
-is that samsung 2233rz that great or is it just all marketing
-What other models should I consider that offer good value for money with good gaming performance

Thanks in advance,
Mops.

LED backlight for computer monitors at the moment -

- "instant" stage change (no warmup, fast on/off, leads to very high dynamic CR)
- lighter/smaller (thinner/lighter displays)
- marginal power savings
- arguably cleaner to manufacture/dispose
- possibly better longevity, though unproven and arguable

Those are the advantages, whether or not it is worth it to you, well is up to you. Personally I would not go out of my way to get one with LED back lighting, but it is a slight plus. Current monitors are edge lit, see here for more information http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/monitors/display/lcd-monitor-buyers-guide-spring2010_3.html#sect0

Your 120hz/60hz issue might be from TV reviews. Most 120hz TVs do not take 120hz input, they take 60hz input, which is why it might be said that it isn't really 120hz. All current 120hz advertised computer monitors take 120hz input and can output 120hz.

The 120hz monitors offer better motion performance, since they can display 120 frames vs. 60 frames. They have much faster response times then non 120hz monitors. They do not improve in other other aspects such as quality, and opinions of that are mixed at best compared to other TNs even.

The only 2 120hz with your size/resolution constraints are the Samsung and Viewsonic. There are several more choices that are larger and 1920x1080.

The reason you are not able to find much information on newer screens is that 16:10 at 1680x1050 is becoming more scarce. 1920x1080 16:9 screens can now be had now for almost the same price as this the new popular "standard."

A good screen with your size/resolution requirements is the Dell 2209wa, but I think some recent buyers have commented that it seems to be hard to purchase now (perhaps being phased out).

Thank you for most comprehensive reply.

I'm really keen for the 120HZ, so I'll go and get samsung 2233rz.

I really do not want 1900x1080 resolution, TBH I'm not a big fan of widescreen but there's nothign else on the market really. Also more res=less FPS. Further to that my eyes are not 20/20 so I dont like high resolutions because it's hard to see/read in desktop mode.

Thanks,
Mops.

[EDIT]
Forgot to mention,
I'm not really prepared to spend extra for a non TN panel.
Also soemthing that puts me off 2233rz is not "fantastic" reviews. They are generally good but not excellent, and since it's a higher price range I would expect nothing but excellent reviews. I'll try to find one on display to have a look at myself...

You should consider paying a bit more for the Acer GD235HZ (40$ more than the Samsung on Amazon) or Asus 120hz monitors (both have better image quality). Bumping the res up to 1080p will barely make a difference in FPS. The Samsung 2233rz has an unfixable blue tinge to it's colors, so unless you have a colorimeter you will be stuck with a blue tinge. Not sure if TFT central or Prad mention the blue tinge in their reviews, but I owned one and the blue tinge was really bothersome (fortunately I have a colorimeter).

how does a colorimeter fix the problem that the osd or software that creates color profiles cant?

Anyone know where the Samsung 2233rz can be purchased? Best Buy showed instock for online purchases a few days ago, but now shows out of stock, as does every other seller it seems.

That makes the decision even more difficult. that acer is somewhat more expensive than 2233rz, and pretty much the same price as the HP 24" with IPS panel....

But I think that 24" acer is the go for me... a bit more expensive but oh well :)

I bought the 24" 120HZ Acer.
Very pleased with it.
Thanks for help guys.

Mops.
