Clean install of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop. The system is a VIA chipset w/ a Radeon Mobility 9600 with a handy Athlon 64.

I can load up all the 4in1s, the modem drivers, the wireless, the touchpad, everything. However, I never receive the option to turn on hibernation. Once I install the video card drivers, I can turn on hibernation.

I have tried the Omega Drivers, Hacked CATs to work with Mobility, the mobility drivers that came with my laptop, and the default radeon 9600 drivers in SP2.

With any of these drivers, I can not use hibernate. When I hit the power button, nothing happens. When I go to sleep mode, everything locks up. When I try to hibernate via shutdown menu, the computer never shuts down. Very rarely does the reboot actually work.

Any ideas?

Wow - weird. I dug out an old XP SP1a CD and installed it. It works fine. So, that rules out hardware failures.

Sounds like a strange SP2 issue...

Crazyness! I updated to Service Pack 2 and sadly, all the problems return. I guess I am stuck with SP1a on my laptop for awhile...
