XP won't recognize 9800 pro

Got a replacement 9800 pro from ATI, put it in my son's computer. It seemed to work fine, but I then checked the device manager, and it showed the card as "Unknown" device. That is, it wasn't recognized as a display adapter. The card in before that was a Nvidia 5500 oc. I uninstalled it and used DP pro. Spend the entire day installing and uninstalling drivers, including the Nvidia Nforce 2 drivers for the motherboard. Is it a bad card?
 
Did you by any chance use driver cleaner? There is a bug which causes it to remove the generic VGA card driver windows xp needs to detect new cards.

When I first installed my 7800GTX512 my screen was a garbled mess, I thought my card was DOA. I was able to fix it by doing a system restore from before I used driver cleaner.
 
Yes, Driver Cleaner Pro. Unforunately, I gave up and now I'm reformating and reinstalling. It just my kid's gaming computer anyway. If that doesn't work, back to ATI it goes (which is too bad, because I think it was one of the newer 360 ones).
 
The reinstall of XP fixed it. I am getting a bit of artifacting booting into windows, however. Don't reacall seeing that with the last 9800pro I had.

It shouldnt be doing that. Is it "artifacting" or just crappy res on the windows xp splashscreen. If its just crappy res, that is normal and will fix with sp2.
