XP remembering file icon mode?

Hi all.

My XP won't remember my file display mode (Thumbnail, Icon, List, etc) for ANYTHING. Is there some way to force it to remember your settings for each folder?

"Remember each folder's view settings" is checked, but it doesn't do anything.

I have trouble with this as well. I like to have all windows set to view list mode except for "My Computer" and the Control Panel. So I set it to remember list for all, then I manually change the two listed above to view icons.

The amount of time that it stays is wildly variable. Sometimes one reboot and they are back to list. Sometimes several reboots are required. But it always changes back at some point.

Never could find a fix.
