XP/program install space and Raptor question.

Well, I've been thinking about my system lately, so I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a 36GB Raptor. Are these pretty much the best drives still? I noticed there are some Ultra 320 drives that have faster seek times, but are they reliable? Pretty much what I'm asking is, is there an Ultra 320 solution that is better or, at least, comparable for the same price, including the SCSI card itself? Now, on to the other question. I was thinking about alotting 5-7GB for the XP Pro install. That'll be enough, right? Also, since the drive I'm looking for is going to be fast, should I make another partition on the drive to install my programs and such? My 160GB drive is going to turn into my storage only drive. Thanks
 
You would need to be doing something very disk intensive to really get full use of SCSI. What do you plan on doing?

SATA Raptors would be great drives for better performance in say gaming load times, but if that's all you're doing then I'd say SCSI is overkill. All though it does give nice bragging rights. :D

Plus you're going to drop at least $250 on a good SCSI U320 drive not to mention a SCSI card is gonna run like $100+ depending, and unless you've got a 64 bit PCI you're gonna waste money on a u320 card. You could go with a u160 card and put it in a 32bit slot but what's the point? Yeah it's probably a bit faster but that's really just burst transfers.

You're really only going to get the full benefit from U320 in a RAID type of situation with a 64bit PCI slot and card. U320 RAID is anything but cheap as well.

Just stick with SATA and save your cash. :) A 36GB Raptor should be plenty of space for the OS.
 
You really can't compare the two on the level of price. The SCSI solution will be much much more expensive. The best drive currently available if the 74 GB Raptor. I have two machines, both of which have the 36 GB version as the OS drive, and I couldn't be happier. The only time I'd consider SCSI is if your going to slap a few of them in an enterprise server with a real RAID5 controller powering them.
 
Well, load times aren't particularly slow(to me) with my current set up, I was just trying to think of something to do. Maybe I'll just get a different heat sink instead since I'm on the stock unit still.
