I recently found this XP Pro feature out and I was wondering how much if any performance loss do you experience by putting both raid 0 drives in the array on the same ide cable? Any thoughts?
 
Both drives on the same cable would not be a good idea. IDE can only access one device at a time on a cable. With it needing information from both devices at once. I bet you would see a lot worse access times over what a Raid 0 setup would give you that is on seperate channels.

Agreed. Run them on separate channels. Other than that, software RAID works fine for a workstation.
 
Where does hardware raid overpass software raid then? in a desktop or a server?

I prefer hardware on both, but software RAID works just fine. I wouldn't use it on a server because I'd do a big SCSI array on a caching controller with as many megs of RAM as I could throw on it :)

One benefit of software RAID is that you don't have to worry if your RAID controller gets out dated or impossible to replace. If that happens and it goes, you've lost your data most likely.

I still prefer a hardware solution more for personal/historical reasons. I'm old fashioned in many ways.
