I was reinstalling some older games I had, and one of them messed something up with XP because now I don't have an icon for stuff like "my documents", "my computer", cd-drive, "control panel", and "network places". All I get now is a default, white square-looking box for the icon. It's annoying to look at. How can this be fixed? Rebooting didn't help, and I also tried switching between XP theme and Classic theme, but no luck.

Have you tried changing the colour depth of your display i.e. to 16bit then back to 32bit, this should rebuild the icon cache.

Also sticking in your XP CD and running the command sfc /scannow will fix it.

Actually, I was able to fix it very easily.

There is a program on Microsoft's website which is part of the PowerToys for Windows XP. It's called "Tweak UI". In that program is an option to "rebuild icons", and that's what fixed it.
