I plan on overclocking my XP 3200. It has a Zalman AlCu cooler on it, which dropped the temps by 20F from the Volcano 7+ it previously had.

It's on an Asus A7V880 board and I was wondering if anyone had an O'clocking guide I could follow?

I don't wanna O'clock too much, maybe up to 2.6Ghz or so, just to be in range of the P-4's we have at work.

Any suggestions? Or anything unknown I have to watch out for???

I dont think those chips o/c that well. But if you have good ram you can try raising just the fsb until it fails memtest86. Then find the sweet spot for the ram, maybe set a divider for the ram.

The only thing holding any chip back would be the mobo & ram. Asus is known for good boards. And I'll be getting some good Mushkin ram at the end of the month.

It's running way cooler with the Zalman than my Thermaltake, and very quiet too. I have a 600watt P/S, so if I do O'clock it, the heat won't be a problem.

I made this post because the last thing I o'clocked was a k5-133 to 160. And I was wondering if and how things have changed since then.

i didn't say you couldn't overclock it .. i said good luck getting to 2.6 stable & cool

it's going to take 1.70vcore+ min...

it takes 1.65 for my mobile to do 2.5 which is actually not bad

my mobile takes 1.8v to hit 2.5 ghz.. who cares? and its a 35w.. thsoe voltages are what processors used to run it..

pretty much with that cpu, you need to raise the fsb.. 236mhz will get you to 2.6 ghz.. since your multiplier is 11. you need to get your memory to run at 236..

so basically, loosen the timings on the ram.. and start raising your fsb little by little.. once your comptuer starts failing prime 95, raise the cpu voltage a bit.. then start raising the fsb again.

then after you figure out what the cpu can handle, start testing the ram to see how tight you can get the timings at whatever fsb you end up on...

also, i just found this.. its for your specific motherboard.. i don't hvae time to read it right now..

what's your temps and cooling method.. 1.80 is a little high for my blood...

Lol, just read your sig. Rage Pro pwns the hell out of a 7800GTX any day of the week.

Yeah I know. My old GeForce 2 is still kicking even @ o'clocked speeds, even though it's years old!!! I bought it new. Compared to some of the newer things out there that break more frequently. Heck my Slot-A 900 is still running.

According to the article you posted, the board can only go as high as 227fsb stably with stock cooling.

Loosen timings on ram??? The Mushkin 2-1GB sticks I'm going to get have timings of 3-3-8, what should they be then???? Loosen, higher numbers or lower???

I'll look for Prime95 tonight. Or do you have a link???

I have a 3200+ running stable @ 2.63 w/ 1.58V and temps of 36 idle/ 45 load on air-cooling? <shrug>

Did I get lucky? :p

no, you juss hav an A64, the OP has an AXP ;)

i never ran it very much at 2.5ghz.. my temps were like 50-55 load.. shuttle ice w/ panaflo.. i ran it for a very long time at 2.2ghz.. and it still did 45 or so degrees load.. right now.. i think it takes 1.475 v to do 2.2 ghz.. i can't remember anymore.. right now i got it at 1.376v, 1.8ghz. and 38 celcius with the fan turned way down low so its almost silent.. i don't do anything more than surf the net or type papers anyomre.. and watch downloaded tv shows.. so i don't really need performance..

lol .. that is funny ..

yea there's no way you'll get to 2.6 w/ less than 1.6vcore on a xp

mine is a pretty good stepping 35w mobile and it takes 1.85 to do 2.6 stable..
