Haha thanks. What's the powerplay feature you're talking about?

And if it doesn't downclock in 2d mode, is the fan going to be loud all the time? How loud is the fan during idle compared to an evga 9800 gtx+? I'm really sensitive to sound.

I read you can use EVGA precision to adjust nvidia based XFX cards so can I set it up so that it does downclock in 2d mode?
 
Powerplay is when the card downclocks itself in 2D mode to save power. I was expecting the dual slot cooler to be very pretty quite, but it is louder than my old HIS 3850. The way XFX has been talked up on various forums I was expecting a little more tbh, especially for the cost.

As with most modern video cards, the best noise results can be achieved by manually tweaking the fan settings.

After browsing the XFX 4850 bios myself, I can confidently say that it's a good idea for the owner to take some control over those features. The XFX 4850 has a strange fan, the profile is bad and the speeds are quite slow (It tops out at 1800 RPM or similar...)

I'm not really comfortable with tweaking anything directly at that level because I have no experience with stuff like this. I'm fine with using things like EVGA precision, but I'm not familiar with changing bios, etc. So would getting this card not be a good idea if I want a pretty quiet gpu? Are fanspeed and downclocking not even fixable with rivatuner?
 
You can control the fan speed with Catalyst Control Center. Anything below 50% is pretty quiet.
 
Interesting to know. I was hoping for a quiet GPU fan. Looks like I may have to tweak a bit, or look harder for a deal on a waterblock for it.

I'm still fogging up the glass on the front door looking for the UPS man to bring me my goodies.
I hate waiting......
 
If you want a quiet 4850, get the HIS ICEQ one. It is extremely quiet in every review, and is dual slot.
 
Well, after having a late delivery, going out for dinner, beer was involved, I prolly still will not comment on the XFX board till tomorrow.
As of this moment, I still have to mount the mobo and the waterblock on my new C1 9550.

Beer makes you lethargic, mmmmmkay?
I'll post what I know about this video card tomorrow afternoon.
I will say that I expected a different design on the fan, and there is a bunch of aluminum under that black plastic cover.
Really looking forward to putting it thru it's paces. It's my first PCIe video card.

So if you do lower the fan speed to a quiet level, would that risk overheating the card since it doesn't downclock when it's in 2D mode?
 
would u say its pretty much a reference design with cosmetic differences? seems like its very similar

Usually @ 80-90% its pretty damn loud. @50% if you have other case fans you probably won't notice it.

These things will get hot. Most people usually swap on an accelro s1 to control the heat

I tried to build a silent pc (at least when I'm not gaming), so all my case fans are inaudible basically. Is it safe for the card to put it at less than 50% to something inaudible?
 
If you get an accelero S1 you can put it on passive if you have enough case flow. Or you could ziptie on some real quiet 120mm and it'll do MUCH better then the stock cooling.

What's ziptying?

Just wondering, I know gaming puts a load on gpu's so it becomes loud, but does watching movies also make video cards become loud?

Oh yea, dumb me. Sorry for the dumb question. What I meant to ask was, if you reduce the fan speed at each temperature stage from what it would normally be at, would the increased temps still be within a safe range for the cards to operate?

What is the 4850 to be used for? If it's a HTPC, you can probably lower the fan speed. But for gaming, you probably can't. It gets insanely hot.

I'm mainly going to be watching movies, but occasional gaming is a possibility.

So would you say it's safe for the card if I make the 4850 silent whenever I'm idling or just watching movies, but let it run however fast it needs to if I happen to be gaming? I can tolerate fan noise when I'm gaming, just not any time else.

Just making sure, you have the xfx version of the 4850 with 512mb?
 
If you're building an HTPC, why not wait for the 4750? Cheaper, cooler, quieter than the 4850 and nearly as good in gaming.

I have both the asus 4850 and a VisionTek 4850.

I don't think they have different designs.

I'm not technically building an htpc, it's going to be my main pc, but for entertainment purposes, I'll be watching movies more than playing games. I can also get the 4850 at a very cheap price which is why I'm considering it.
 
has anyone put an aftermarket cooler on this specific card? are these the same as any other brand of 4850s? i got one a while ago but the fan is starting to act up and i'm wondering which cooler would work/fit the best.
 
artic accelero S1 don't buy the rev 2 edition as it doesn't let you crossfire if you eventually choose to go down that path
