Hi all,

I recently (few months) bought a second hand (few months old) XFX 4890, one of the slightly factory overclocked ones.

In the last couple of weeks, when idling, the fan has started making a kind of "clipping" noise, as if a wire is just catching in the blades. I've checked it and cannot find anything binding at all and if you poke the fan whilst running a few times, it's possible it make it run silent, until the speed changes again.

When running, the card idles at ~60c in win7 and around 69c in games.

Firstly, does this temp sound correct for the card?

Secondly, am i correct in assuming the fan is gazebo'd and needs replacing? (if so, what are my options for a normal, or even stock, replacement that exits out the case?)

Thanks.

yeah your correct the fan needs to be replaced.. will probably lower temps as well.. could always just go with aftermarket cooling instead of trying to RMA it with XFX.. XFX will still cover the warranty on the card if you replaced the stock cooling.. just make sure you save the stock cooler if you ever have to RMA it for something else..

My 4890s run mid 50s idle and high 60s-low 70s while running F@H. My fans are set to run at ~45% speed. I have 1 XFX and 1 HIS both at 875 Mhz core. If the fan is running on auto I would not be surprised to see those temps but the ticking sound is not good.

Are you both running win7? ie aero desktop? that i know causes higher temps at idle.

Any recommendations for the replacement cooler? looking for an exit out the back like stock.

Not sure they'd let me RMA as it's second hand and i've no warranty card :(

XFX 4890's were rubbish, quite a failure. Nope i don't think you'll be able to RMA it since it's second hand, but worth a try? If not then i'd replace the cooler with a better aftermarket one anyway then you'll get slower fan speeds and cooler temperatures.

if it came with the double lifetime warranty then yes he can RMA it second hand.. usually you can just call them or email them and say you bought a card from the original owner and whats wrong with it.. usually they will still let the RMA happen.. but id just just go with aftermarket cooling over spending 2 weeks waiting for am RMA..

Yeah, i'm thinking UK RMA won't be quite as happy as the US stuff. I just need a recommended cooler for it now, as i said, one that exhausts from the back, do they exist for this card?

For what it's worth, I have an XFX 4890 (not the overclocked one, just the stock reference card) and it also always made a sound similiar to what you're describing. I remember reading about other people reporting the same issue. Additionally, my idle temps are the same as yours. About 60C idle with the fan on auto. Here's some more discussion on temps for these cards. It's been going strong for about 9 months now with no issues.

Thanks for that, i guess now the only thing is just how annoying the fan is, i mean, i don't tend to mind fan noise, but this is just really irritating with it's clicking :/

Does anyone know what i need to look for in getting a replacement that will fit this card?
