Xfire/SLI question

I know you are supposed to get improved performance with both. My question is what exactly benefits from SLI or Crossfire?
I've read that the memory doesn't get doubled, so two 1GB cards would work as a faster 1GB card. Does the memory clock or core clock get doubled? In SLI, does the Cuda cores get doubled, or is it same story with the memory? How about the SPU for both?
Is that what is kinna going on in the extreme cards like the HD 6990 which has double SPUs and memory (basically a crossfire in one box)?

Memory is like you first stated. Buy two 1gb cards and put them together and you will still only have 1gb of memory that is effective. The core clock and memory clock will act as one. If one card has a lower memory and core clock the other card will run at those slower speeds. Also if you were to try and overclock the cards it usually wont overclock as high as you could with one card. The core count will be added together unlike the memory I believe. You will not exactly double the performance by putting two cards together. Say you are getting 50fps with one card and you get another card you will not get 100fps. It will be a little lower. All has to do with scaling. More of a driver limitation and efficiency thing. There is also issues with stuttering and other problems that arise. Not always but there are more problems associated with xfire/sli than single card solutions.

Thanks Hammerforged. I ended up biting the bullet and ordering a 670 ftw today. I was considering CF 6850s or SLI 460/470. Haven't told my girlfriend yet, but there goes money saved up for bikes for us and three kids for the summer.

I wish you luck, and I have dibs on your stuff if your GF kills you.

You'll be much happier with a single card i believe. Should be smoother and less of a hassle. That 670 should be beast as well. Made a good decision getting one with a 680 pcb. You can always sell it on here if something goes south ha. Don't have much of a solution for the gf though ha. I always just tell my gf that it was an awesome deal and lie about the price ha. May not be the best for your situation though ha. Good luck

She is a girlfriend "friend" not wife.

Screw her both figuratively and literally of course ;P

LOL!!!

Oh well, my usual answer is that it's nothing a couple of days of overtime won't cure. Granted this one might take more than just a couple.
