Xeon Qc E3-1230 Processor for Gaming

Any xeon can be used for gaming, the main thing is if it will let u oc or not.

But I read this Xeon does not have built in graphics while the i7 2600 does. I will be using a discrete graphics card. will this issue make any difference in performance between the CPUs? or does the integrated graphics on the i7 2600 shut off when there is a discrete gfx card?

I will not be overclocking.
 
Integrated grpahics do indeed shutdown on both Xeons and I3-5-7's. The bios detects a discrete card and shuts the iGPU portion of the CPU off. You do not have to do anything except make sure you have your monitor plugged into your discrete card and not your motherboard when you power on the PC.

Do your research on your Xeon of choice first and research benchmarks etc... im a little rusty on Xeons, been a while since I built a gaming rig with one but when I did it ran stellar. Server chip or not these chips dont know the difference and will do whatever you want them to.
 
Interesting idea, almost the same price as a 2500k for those of us without a MC nearby... and definitely cheaper than an i7 2600k.
 
There are a couple problems with using the Intel® Xeon® E3-1230 in a gaming system. The biggest is that they are rarely supported outside of a C200 chipset. So the boards that you are going to be limited to are primarily entry level server boards. Also the Intel Xeon E3-1230 are not unlocked so you will have a very difficult time overclock it.

Also the chip is clocked @ 3.2ghz with turbo of 3.6ghz, with an 80W tdp vs 3.4/3.8 with 95w on the 2600k.

the xeon also supports VT-D where the 2600k Doesn't
 
for gaming, a 2500k is more than enough... any reason you need/want hyperthreading?
