I am buying a DP Xeon as was wondering if the application software has to be dual processor certified or will any Intel software work? I know the OS has to know if it is running DP or not, but am not sure about over the counter applications.

Software has to be coded to take advantage of multiple processors for MP to be of any use to the software. Some rendering apps and some other software benefit from multiple processors, but most of the programs you'd probably be running, don't. Most video games don't support multiple processors.

MP does help a lot if you're a heavy multitasker.

Also, why are you building the duallie system for, and why not get a dual Opteron? Xeons are a tad too pricey and are mostly meant for the servers and workstations. I haven't seen performance comparisons or tests yet, so I'd still be recommending dual opterons because the Xeons aren't offering any performance advantages, while commanding a high price.

I get a 30% discount on Intel Xeon processors. AMD would be 2,000 more. Thanks for the reply

In the end the Optrons will be less expensive due to their lower power usage, so concequently they are cooler also, which of course means less air conditioning.
