anyone with an xconnect PSU
Xconnect

How do u hide the wires, they are so damn thick and unflexible. I can only get them into moderatly good hiding positions. Any suggesstions
 
I actually went back to my Antec 480W. I had a hell of a time with those wires and it ended up being more cluttered in my case. I'm going to use mine in an HTPC setup that I'm building, or I'm going to sell it off.
 
In my opinion, wires aren't that ugly if they are routed properly. That doesn't mean all of the wires have to be hidden. I think a small amount of wires showing is tasteful, and acceptable. Just don't loop the around each other and create coils of wires to take up the slack.
 
its the ones that get used, the mobo connector is 1/2 thick, round plastic tub that does not bend. the others are 1/4 thick that will not flex. Its annoying really, they hsould be more flexible
 
I honestly don't know if this is safe(as far as damaging them) but when I was installing my pieces, I used a hair dryer to warm up the cables a little bit so they were a tad more malliable. It made putting them in so much easier.
 
Regardless of what goes around in the forums... I have one and love it... I've loaded a case with every imaginable gizmo, doo-hickey, and pointless light-up doo-dad... not to mention 4 sticks of ram, 2 CD-Roms, 4 HDDs, Radeon 9800 Pro, blah blah blah and didn't have a single problem with voltage/wattage. It's nice to see a 500 watt power supply that can actually dish out 500 watts of continuous power without any signifigant hiccups.

The only problem with them is that the modular cables are very thick and almost impossible to shorten... it would almost be like powering your entire case with water cooling lines that you're not allowed to cut. Unless you're building a tall server case you're going to have to loop or hide wires despite the modular feature.

The ATX connector isn't nearly as long as an Enermax cable (can someone show me the 3 meter tall case that needs THAT connector?) but at least those cables can be cut and shortened.

I'd say it was six of one, half dozen of the other. If you're not putting a window in the case I love my X-connect... with the window though you're going to have some problems with the cables. It's (IMHO) a quality power supply (especially for the money) but it's not very mod friendly.

evil PSU that blow up and have the stablity of a donkey on a surfboard, but I've only seen two people with bad PSUs, and one person who had a screwy mobo which ultra replaced. I've used two or three know one in my current rig which has a neon tube in it{yes neon gas not neon colored cold cathod}, and two others in systems I've built for friends. None of these is over six months old so maybe they will break down the road, but the rail were as stable as my antec true 480, which I beat to death before have to replace it due to not having enough juice for my new system. 480 != 480, more like about 430 - 450, the ultra has no prob 500 - 550 draw thats not through board but through mutimeter crimps on all three rails :)
 
Just so you guys know, this power supply is manufactured by Powmax which is one of the lower-end PSU manufacturers out there. Powmax PSU's are generic PSU's used in alot of cheap cases.

This power supply was just reviewed in MaximumPC this month in a PSU roundup and it failed the tests they put it under.

Install it at your own risk because a power supply can destroy every component in your system within one nanosecond when you flip on the power.
 
I just bought one of these on E-Bay and was really excited about installing it. I started to read peoples comments and became a little discouraged. I decided to try it out myself and see how I like it........Well I dont really like it. The cables end up taking up waaayyy too much room. Anyone interested in buying this power supply would be better served in buying a different PSU and cutting the cables to achieve the desired look.

The actual unit looks great, I have the black chrome version and am going to be quite sad to get rid of it. Oh well it sounded like a good idea.
 
It was for AMD modos or something. Since i got a p4 it decided to find something out. I cut that crappy plastic off. I only did a small section.Its not glued onto the inner silver section. the silver looking section is just very thing wires weaved around the inner standard wires. there is also some silver foil stuff in the wire weave.But if u cut a small wedge out the wires will do perfect 90 degree bends so maybe if i do some 90 bends i can route them directly down from the psu, behind the mobo tray and a few 180s to components. And the inner wire weave keeps the knife from going into the inner important wires. The mobo connector still be a trouble because of its length.
 
i just got my x-connect in the mail yesterday and had all day today to work on putting my computer parts into a new case i bought. i don't understand what everyone's problem is with the x-connect cables. they seemed to bend and twist just fine for me... i was able to route them all to my will and they are almost all hidden.

i am waiting on a fan controller in the mail so my fan wires are a complete mess (had to use 3 to 4 pin converters for them all until i get the fan controller), but once i get it and get everything wired up properly i'll post a few pics.

i absolutely love this power supply.
 
Well i have yet to have a prob with mine. The lines aren't too hard to bend but they do take up alot of room. I used most of the supplied lines except for 1, so much for less wires. I think build quality aside if you don't have a window you'll be happy. If you do have a case window it looks better with some UV otherwise .. eh...

Have you guys even seen the inside of one of these power supplies? They dont even have heatsinks inside them lol.
 
I think one of the main points that someone should consider when buying this is that it is meant to be shown off not hidden. Why would you buy a chrome finish modular psu with UV reactive cables and then stick them in a place you wont see?

As for the cables, the main power cable is pretty thick and a bitch to bend in tight spots. The other cables are thinner but it takes some time trying to figure out how to rout them to each device.

Im on my second x-connect because the first one died during a thunderstorm.

i have a 6800GT OC, 64 3400+, 160GB SATA, 4 Fans, and a DVD/CD+RW setup, and this thing is just fine. the psu looks great, and the wires look nice when lit up. i just stuck the thick mobo cord into the 5.25 drive bay area.

Since you don't know what the inside of one looks like but can still make an obviously uninformed statement, I guess your statement about UltraX's being rebranded Powmax should be considered uninformed as well.

Better stick to what you know and have experience with, not what you read on another thread.

I think that MaximumPC got a bum UltraX unit. Mine has worked well. However, I believe that UltraX's quality control is spotty, which makes purchasing one like a game of Russian roulette.

This Ultra 600w PSU doesn't even have heatsinks at all while the 500w X-connect only has small ones that are about worthless as any other generic power supply. I was under the assumption that the X-connect didn't have any at all ither considering the other Ultra branded Powmax products but i guess they do have some tiny ones stuck on there for looks lol.

I suggest you do a little research on the power supply forums on Ultra X-connect PSU's and also do a search for my name in the power supply forums considering the information i've provided on power supplies in the past before you suggest i dont know what i'm talking about.

MaximumPC got the same quality of PSU that you have installed right now except they put it under heavy load and you have not.

Some of you need to learn how to read hardcore information here on the forums instead of an advertisement in a review. The Ultra X-connect power supplies are crap.

The only reason they are getting good reviews is because they are flashy and the majority of reviewers have no idea how to put a power supply under heavy stress. You can't expect something manufactured by Powmax to be high quality. They use cheap generic parts inside the power supply.

If you want a modular PSU then i would suggest a high-end power supply like the OCZ Modstream, Antec Neopower, or TTGI Super Flower.

Please feel free to post in the power supply forums and tell us about your high quality Ultra X-connect PSU.

The X-connect is an average PSU that will run a normal computer like any other generic PSU. If you want a uber PSU then i would suggest an OCZ PowerStream 520w, PC Power and Cooling 510w, Enermax 600w, Antec NeoPower 480w or something similar.
 
Wow! What a reply!

Well mine works fine. So when it blows up I'll update the thread so you guys can get a good chuckle. I feel warm air coming out of the back of it which leads me to believe that there is an adequate tranfer of heat, so i guess even weeny HS's will work.
 
I have also heard that the newer windowed versions have had some improvements made over the previous shiny-box versions...perhaps this contributed to the bum review of the ultra in maxpc. Even at that, those are pretty small sinks...but as better as big sinks are, good airflow can be just as important to remove that heat...and as loud as these supplies are I bet they move alot of air. Hey, nobody need get defensive...I have an Antec Stealth 520...and was having constant bluescreen problems...thinking about RTVing it, and then I read the review...OUCH. I put a 480watt thermaltake butterfly in and my problems went away...and I went through every other part in that computer trying to find the problem without thinking about the PSU.
