It's already known that Xbox Next will feature six next generation IBM PowerPC processing cores, spread across three discrete CPUs, and an advanced graphics hardware solution provided by chipset manufacturer ATI. It's expected that the system will dispense with the hard disc drive in favour of a high capacity removable flash memory solution - effectively a large memory card.

three dual core procs? holy shit.. i knew it was gonna be based on the power pc proc, but not like that!

Wow, this sounds all too good to be true. Kinda reminds me of someone else that claimed to be having an awesome gaming console. *cough* Infinium *cough* :p :D

microsoft is a tad different than infinium.. ;)

The real reason they are dumping the hard drives and getting flash memory cards is cause there are so many people making illegal copies of games, using mod chips..ect..

my friends xbox has a mod chip & 120gig HDD, its incredible, hes got sega, nintendo, N64, PSX, NES & Gameboy emulators and roms on it, along with about 35games or so..

well, it didnt say they were totally dumping it... it could be an option. and that they would wait and see what sony is going to do with the ps3..

it dosn't matter what they use, people will find a way to crack it. can you name a recent system that DOSN'T have a mod chip for it?

I think Nintendo is the only company to get around this problem.(by using small DVDs and cartridges)

mod chips rule. says me and everyone i install for.
No mod chip = BOOOOOO

you've got pm... :D

but still... the processing power on that is quite impressive if those specs hold true. i cant imagine being able to use that as a computer some how.

Clean out your box dude (or email me)

If they do decide to go with no hard drive, I bet one of the first "accessories" that Microsoft will offer will be an external hard drive. I also bet there will be a hack to use a standard hard drive very shortly after that :)

i wouldn't bet...i know there will be ;)

if not i'll eat my hat

itll be MACTACULAR!

getting rid of the harddrive was a fucking bullshit move, but I know why they did it...xbox + modchip + bit torrent = hours of love :D

I honestly have my doubts about that... Three POWER5's would cost a fortune. Nobody buys a $2000 "console".

their not g5's.. im not sure what they are.

Six cores spread over 3 cpus = recipe for disaster and craptacular graphics.

Programmers have a hard enough time with the PS2's two vector units and the saturn's 4 sh2(sh4?) processors, so I hope we don't get shitty ps½ graphics on the xbox 2 like the ps2 has..

if that sounds bad... the ps3 is supposed to have like 8 processors

just because macs are overpriced doesnt mean they really cost that much to make...

There seems to be a myth that you need a HDD for mod chips. Ps2 has no HDD, but it has plenty of modchips.

Also dual layer DVDs will be the media of choice for chippers.

I think the big issue will be the performance gap that we are likley to see between the consoles. Everyone is pushing for such extremes in power that there is bound to be a gap.

If they turn out to all be able to run the same games at about the same performance, then it will be nothing short of a conspiracy.

no, but having a HDD to store stuff on kicked ass. the main reason my friend got a modchip was to rip his games so he didnt have to keep swapping disks. next was to put movies and stuff on it and use XBMP so it was a full media player. and then he got into bittorrent to try to find the few good games (still cant find THU for some reason)

...wtf these systems are leaving the world of entertainment systems and entering the world of entertainment servers.
