So what do you guys think about the X800XT?

1. Which brand do you think will be the best or should I just look at the ATI version?
( keep in mind I have an ASUS mobo)
2. Is the PCI-E version actually going to show performance benefits? ( Just got new comp without PCI-E and don't really want to get a new mobo)

Ty,
Smcgee85

My Comp
ASUS K8V Deluxe SE Mobo
Athlon64 3400+
160gb 7200 rpm HD
FX 5200 GPU
1gb of PC 3200 RAM

i'd go with sapphire. it's generally proven to be one of the better ones. and pci-express is sort of like agp8x right now. nothing is hammering it enough to prove it's usefulness so i wouldn't be totally concerned with it.

Way too early to tell. Nothings even out yet, drivers are yet to be optimized, games are yet to be released....HOLD OFF and let the dust settle. Best advice I've ever given.

Well, if you have a P4 they have the same article around that idea--regarding the P4 as well, you can find it off the first page. This is old news.

Thanks for the help.
I have another question.
I have heard that the 6800 will have ps3.0. How important will this be in the future? Is this a software thing or a hardware thing? Could ATI just come out with a new driver later that has ps 3.0?

Thx,
Smcgee85

i could be wrong on this ( ive been pretty confused lately :\ )
but i think the x800 has ps3.0, just not vs3.0

I would just write a big enough check for both of them and let the tech guys sort it out.

I think the pro only has 2.0, XT has 3.0... I would say pixel shader 3.0 matters, but not right away. Shaders and shader preformance are becoming more important every day.

i thought they were both the same card, just one clocked higher and has 16 pipes enabled.

they are indeed very similar, not sure where/how it's disabled but I am fairly certain this is the case.

none of the new Radeon cards have support for PS 3.0. Only PS2.0 and 2.0b. The only difference is the pipes and clockspeeds. XT = 16 Pro = 12

I've noticed that your using a Geforce FX 5200, if your needing to upgrade now than I would suggest an X800Pro. As Geforce 6800 Ultra's aren't in stores yet and niether is ATi's X800XT. Also the lower priced 6800GT still has a completely unknown ETA.

Lol, I'm not necessarily looking at buying it in the next few days. I can wait. My thinking is that if your going to go a long way for the pro why not go the whole distance for the xt.

Back to one of my original questions:
Is this a software thing or a hardware thing? Could a new driver give the Radeon cards PS 3.0 when ati feels like it.
Ty,
Smcgee85

p.s : I just noticed that you have a x800. How's it going for you? Who's make of the card or maybe ATI's do you have?

The SM 3.0 that the nVidia cards have is implemented in hardware. ATI can't implement it via a driver change.

But nobody knows ket if SM3.0 will be any use what so ever yet.

Buying a pro is a bad idea for many MANY reasons:

12 pipelines
slower memory and clocks
rapid decrease in resale value: Compare lifetime change in prices of the 9800 pro to the 9800 XT.

Starting retail price is, at worse is 100 bucks less, at best is 50 bucks less. Why why why are you not going to spend such a small increase in % of total to get a significantly more futureproof card.

Uh, I agree completely with everything you just said. Which is why I said earlier that I was looking at the x800xt and not pro.

Smcgee85

Have you noticed that Asus originally had the xt and pro looking exactly the same and they were the same card? Now they changed the xt to look different. Does this mean their physically different cards?

Smcgee85

by the time ps 3.0 comes out alot in games there will proabbly be 2-3 newer cards out that i'm sure ati will have support on.

Yeah, but if i get this card I'm not looking to buy a new one for at least 2 years.

Smcgee85

2 years huh? Hm, you might nedd SM3 support after all. Personally, though I'm starting to waver to back to getting an ATI card, namely the HIS X800XTPE IceQ II. God damn what a mouthful.

Well that or one of Sapphire's Toxics [but they look fugly]. Anyone know what the stock speeds for the toxic line up will be?
