i was oc'ing my vid card using ATI tool. when i was doing the max core the computer froze, and i had to turn it off and when i turned it back on and went to ati tool i got this message

Why did it freeze?I thought its suppost to lower to core if it starts getting to high. And i also did memory overclock and it stopped around 522 and the PE is 560 i believe. i thought there was no difference between the memory. shouldnt mine run at 560?
 
pci express x800xts run at 500/500, the platinum edition x800xt runs at 520/560
 
This is a pretty typical result of overclocking that card...or at least, I had similar results with my XT-PE. It's difficult to use ATI Tool to find the max core on these cards. You have to set it to run each clock for 30 minutes and let it go until it freezes, then check the last working frequency. Or you could do testing manually, which is what I did...basically got an idea of a good clock setting and ran Far Cry for a decent amount of time, lowering the clock until it was completely stable. Most cards exhibit "snow" when their core gets too high, or some even downclock, but for these cards they just plain lock up.

If your memory is indeed GC16 (1.667 ns), then it is theoretically rated for 600 MHz, but that doesn't mean it can actually hit those speeds. RAM, like cores, aren't identical in terms of clockability, and of course with the shortage of higher-clocked GDDR3 it seems likely that lesser RAM would be allocated to the regular XTs.
 
kool, i was scared when i locked up. i was like wtf i hope i didnt kill my $700 vid card. but i guess its normal to lock up when to highly overclocked. makes me feel better.
 
Hahaha, don't worry about it, I probably locked up 20 times in my testing. :)
