X800XL at ZZF

409.99 isn't nearly as bad. Definately something to consider since all other high end PCI-E cards are goin for over $550.

As the X800 XL seems to outperform the Pro, doesn't a price like that kind of make sense?

Not when the MSRP of such a card is around the $300 range...

"Supply and Demand"

Has NOTHING to do with MSRP or ripoffs.
The S stands for suggested nothing more.

If there were only 5 pices of bread left in the world to eat
I guarantee the price would be crazy for just one piece.
Good old fashion capitalism is not a dirty word.
This vendor is only doing what YOU or I would
do in there place.

What we really need is for the manufacturere to produce
more cards....

Do they teach basic economics to kids today ?

marketing, paper launches, reviews written over 3 months before launch...

all of this be damned straight to hell. I'm not touching one of these cards until I can get it for $350 or less. I am sick of all this bullshit pricing. As far as investments go, video cards are getting just as bad as buying a new car. Buy one today for $550, in one year it is worth $200. IF you are lucky.

I'll never forget when I went from an Ati RagePro Turbo 2... to a GF3. I spent $300 on that card as soon as it was available and was happy as hell. Next I bought a 9800pro, which I paid $350 for as soon as it was available... and was happy as hell. My line is drawn there. I'll pay $350 for a good video card, but they can go to hell if they want me to pay more than that... and I KNOW I'm not the only one that feels this way.

$550-600 for a x850xt or other top end card? ... screw that.

This is me, giving manufacturers the finger.

Nope, its called, 'Whats good for the Goose, is good for the Gander.'

He made a clearly one sided comment, and I turned it around. It works both ways. Both NV and ATi's highend PCI-E cards are above MSRP.

First of all, I'm not a kid, though I guess it's a compliment in some ways, kind of like a checkout girl carding me for beer.

Second of all, suggested or not, I will not pay above MSRP for anything currently sold on the market today. Manufacturers SUGGEST retail prices for a reason. It gives an indicator to some extent what they charge for their own product to vendors, and what they (to some extent) believe a product is worth. Why should I pay more than what a manufacturer believes their own product is worth?

Third, in a number of retail situations there are agreements about what price a vendor can sell a manufacturer's product at. They're called price controls. Obviously not the case in this instance, but it explains for example why most vendors have a price within $5-10 of each other on a current model HP Laserjet printer.

Supply-and-demand is a a principle. It's not a rule that because there's a small supply, I can fairly charge way above MSRP, it's just that there are some vendors who do because of the supply. I choose to be someone that does not allow that to continue, by not purchasing an item until it is at or below MSRP, thus lowering demand until prices come down.
Your principle of five slices of bread also has to do with an item (food) required for living; video cards don't qualify. All I have to say.

Well said LoneWolf, there is a huge difference between supply and demand and price gouging.

Your points taken. I was not making a blanket observation on age, just wondering where some are coming from. Not meant to single anyout out, don't take it personal. Some just don;t get the concept at all, that was my point.

We will have to agree to disagree. When market forces are at work Suppy and Demand is not just a principle but woven into the frabric our our everyday economy. The examole of bread slices is valid. It makes no difference what the commodity is, scarecity with high demand forces prices to rise. Price controls suggest an economy similar to Socialism or even Communism, one where free enterprise pricing cannot exist becuase of government control.

Price controls have been tried several times in the last forty years here. Each time powerfull union and consumer groups rose up to protest and the government backed down.
Now this vendor IS price gouging, there is no doubt about that, but I would blame the manufacturer not the retailer.

To get back on topic, the ideal situation is for video card manufactures to produce more to meet rising demand. The opposite occurs when supply increases, prices tend to drop.
The average price over time then becomes reasonable. It's all what people want and the greed of those selling it.

Tell me one video card that did not evenually drop in price ?

I'm with lonewolf.

The more people that purchase at such outrageous pricing... simply perpetuates the problem.

Actually your agreeing with me but don't relalize it.

I am saying make more dam cards to get the price down and if this retailer
keeps pulling this crap DONT buy from them to support there tactics....

I know they are...but I just couldn't resist the comment since that's the ONLY card that I know of that hasn't dropped in price. Collector's item or not...it was a video card and was top of the line for it's time.

btw...wasn't this thread about an x800xl? :p I'd like one myself...but I'm getting a 6600gt instead...fits my needs and price more and the retailers aren't gouging the price.

crap, now I have to go to work...

Just got off the phone with ATI. They are still taking pre-orders over the phone @ 299.00 but they have no clue when the card will ship. The operator said "could be 2 days, could be 2 months".

Here's that number:
1-888-974-6728 Mon-Sat 9-9 EST

?? What kind of decent company would accept orders for an item that they dont know when will ship?

That is fvcking sad man.

Just get a 6800 GT and be done with it.

LOL...ya sorry for that, but some do need a fuller explanation to understand this high price beast we face. I want to build another system myself and these dang high prices on video cards are getting to me also.

Maybe an email campaign complaning the price to ZZF might help ?? Dunno..

ZZF consistently has lower prices than Newegg. And doesnt charge shipping on everything, like Newegg does. I dont even consider Newegg anymore. Lots of people are turned off by Newegg anymore.

They're letting their popularity get over the best of them. Greed knows when to creep out and take over.

I want this thing to arrive in Canada! For damn's sake it's from a Canadian company!

Powercolor a reliable brand? All I know is Sapphire and BBA (which is made by Sapphire anyways)
