x800 Pro -> XT mod

i am in the market for an x800. having read the stories on how to mod the Pro up to an XT, i would love to give it a try. my question is if anyone knows how to predict the serial number on the GPU from looking at the outside of the box. or do you just have to buy it, rip it apart, and only then know if you are going to be able to mod it up.
