how hot is too hot? stock its around 40*C and during games being oc'ed to 500/500 its more around 50*C? given that i get no artifacts, how much farther can i oc this thing before i have to get some aftermarket cooling solution?

Its different from card to card.. honestly, it doesn't sound like you know what you are doing with your overclock.. study up and do it the right way or watch your new card crap out after a week..

are those idle or load temps... X850's (assuming you have unlocked the pipes and modded the bios) are hot running cards, but if those are load temps thats not bad... on my x800gto before unlocking and overclocking and using the stock cooler i was seeing load temps in the upper 60's to lower 70's.... one thing to keep in mind though your gpu can handle higher temps than your cpu, but wanting to keep it cooler is always a good thing

what utility are you using to oc with?

i'm using ati tool and those are the load temps btw. oh and this is the vivo version so all 16 pipes came unlocked and i'm using the stock bios.

I got that card a few weeks ago.

At 600/600 scanning for artifacts (atitool), the max temperature was 67c, and gaming 62c.. It has been stable for 1 week strong now.. no problems whatsoever. You have a bit more room to play with temperature wise

card idles at 39c (400/470 stock)

factory thermal paste

50C load isnt that bad using the stock cooler at those speeds... just use ati tool to find the max core/memory.... but what ever the final MHz ati tool finds i always back off a few MHz just to be safe
