I was planning on upgrading my 9800 pro to a x800 pro, until I read the firing squad article on Amd cpu bottlenecks. Tell me what you guys think, is it worth the upgrade? I am waiting for PCI express to become more mainstream. So I cant see spending around 500 to 700 extra on a new Cpu/motherboard combo plus the cost of a card. I could overclock my rig a bit. I would appreciate any input!

My PC as follows AMD XP 3200+ slightly overclocked to 2.317ghz, Asus A7N8X-E deluxe, 1gig of Corsair3200, 9800pro 128. Two Western digital 250gig 7200 drives. Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS. 350Watt Antec True Blue, 5 80mm fans clear case mod.

Sorry Here is the link to the article: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/x800_pro_athlon_xp/

link to the article?

and also, you have to remember if you upgrade your stuff later, the x800 pro will scale up with your hardware ... the 9800 won't do that. computers aren't investments but if you plan on upgrading to a new cpu/mobo this year, you are investing that the x800 pro will scale up with that new system. not only will it have potential to scale up, you'll also be able to play games as best your system can handle NOW.

You've got an xp3200, I wouldn't worry about any bottleneck. I'm getting an X800XT Pe and I've got a lesser cpu. It seems like with these new cards everything is a bottleneck, so everything you do short of building a system around it is going to be bottlenecked to some degree.

Any Intel running over 3GHz and any AMD rated for 3000+ is just fine for the X800XT-PE and the 6800 Ultra.

I would like to disagree. My 6800NU scores 18,400 at stock speeds and my Barton at 11.5x200. For every 100MHZ, I gain 500-600 points. An the really funny thing is, I O/Ced the card, and I gained 800 points or so in 3dmark01, in 03 I gained liked 1500 :D Stock is 325/700 My speeds are 400/850 Anyways any cpu will bottleneck these cards. People who are upgrading from 9800Pro's to GT's X800Pro's are gonna be in for one B/C their cards will allow mabey a bit more details, and little bit higher AA/AF.
