i just installed my x6800 with stock heatsink and artic silver 5. not overclocked i am sitting at 52C idle while staring at it thru the bios hardware monitor. should i go ahead and reseat the heatsink?
i reseated it and got the same results. however after loading windows on the machine i ran core temp and its showing core#0 at 42C and core#1 at 40C. is the bios hardware monitor that off? does anyone know a temp monitor i can trust?
Which MB are you using? Also, when in the BIOS the temperatures will be higher because none of the cooling techniques, like C1E, SpeedStep etc. are active.
Coretemp and Intel's TaT (Thermal Analysis Tool) are generally much more accurate than the readings your motherboard or a program like Speedfan will give you (not that Speedfan doesn't have it's uses). That's because Coretemp and TaT get their temp from the on die sensor, wheras the mobo reading and most 3rd party programs use the temp reading from a sensor diode on the mobo, which, even if it's not faulty (which isn't uncommon), isn't as accurate.
The funny thing is, usually the readings from coretemp are quite a bit higher (5-10C) than the mobo reading. The on die sensor is what the cpu uses to know when to throttle back when temps get too high. From what you're saying, I'd be willing to bet that your mobo sensor is faulty.
You can always buy a thermal probe to be absolutely certain. Radio shack has them for $10-15.
