okay guys, as you can see from the specs in my sig I'm in desperate need of an upgrade. I am putting together a new system for gaming/photo editing/Watching and streaming HD tv shows and movies. I am unsure on budget as I am buying parts with my commission checks which come once a month. Still looking for best value/doller.

The base of the system will be high end because you are only as good as the foundation you stand on.

My monitor is currently a viewsonic 19" 1440x900 widescreen. I will be upgrading the
monitor last.

I usually only use 1 video card, but since this build will last me 3+ years I would like the Option of crossfire/SLI

This is what I have (or will have) so far.

Case: Fortress FT02 black w/ Window (have)

PSU: Seasonic X-750 (Pretty much set on)(will be ordering Friday)

Motherboard: Between Asus P6X58D and Gigabyte UD3R (may be ordering friday)

Processor: Core I7 920 (if I can get a microcenter deal but the closest one is a 6 hour round trip) ( may be picking it up friday)

memory: need help here

Hard drive: Samsung f3 1Tb (for programs)

DVD-rom- Will use current SATA-rom, will get blu-ray later.

Card reader - need to find a reader that JUST does SD cards. Will like multifunction or lcd's as well.

External drive: 1Tb Seagate "expansion drive" USB2.0 ( for media, tv shows, ripped dvd's, photos, backup of important documents like taxes and resumes ) (have)

SSD: not sure if I should spend the money for the 80gig G2... Is it really worth THAT much money?

Thanks guy's i'm finally really close to pulling the trigger and have already started accruing parts. help me out!

EDIT: forgot to add, I WILL be overclocking. The cooler I am going o use is the Corsair H50.

Motherboard: may want to get this as it also has USB 3 and SATA 600 and for a lot less. my friend got this and it easily overclocks.
Memory:I am ordering some Ripjaws by G.Skill this week for my build because of the great reviews and good price. I would recommend 6GB for your build.
SSD: I would get any Intel or OCZ SSD you can. I got an intel SSD for my laptop 2 weeks ago and will get a couple more for my new build this week. Once you go SSD you will never go back. I was going to Raid 0 a couple smaller, cheaper drives which should still give me great performance.
That's all I got for now...

edit for spelling

is the SSD really worth it? it would save the 220+ on the build. how does it help? Im really trying to justify that much money for only 80gb...

I would spend your money on a new monitor before an SSD. But yes the SSD would make significant differences in everything you do from boot times to application loading, everything would be much faster.

I'm definitely going to get a new monitor... But that will be next months commission check. which will be an awesome one buy the way. this months commission check will be going toward new tires+ new computer. I don't know about the SSD, I will see if I have anything left over before I splurge on it.

on a related note... after 3 years, I have zeroed out my newegg preferred account and closed it!!! bad idea for an enthusiast who was in college to get a credit line with newegg. very very bad...

ok guys I have accrued these parts as of now:

Silverstone FT-02 Black with window

Intel I7 920 D0 batch#: 3949A372

Corsair Hydro H50

Seasonic X-750

things left to get:

Motherboard: still undecided

Memory : still undecided

Graphics Card : XFX Radeon 5850

SSD: still a possiblilty

Hard drive: Samsung Spinpoint F3: For programs

OS: Windows 7 Professional

Still looking at a lot of money to spend, lol

any suggestions or recommendations for my build?

Why Windows 7 Professional? For Windows XP Mode? If that's the sole reason for buying it, stick with Windows 7 Home Premium and get VirtualPC 2005 from Microsoft for free.

See if you could find a motherboard in a decent combo deal with the Core i7 920. If you can't, the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R is a good choice, along with some G.Skill RAM.

I'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not the SSD is worth the money, but get the F3 HDD regardless.

I believe he has already purchased his 920, tiraides, so I don't think he would get the combo. @ OP if you haven't already purchased your 920 (I think you have from what you said on your previous post) jump on that combo, pretty good!

yeah I got my 920 for 200 from microcenter. I went ahead and ordered the F3 and window 7 home premium today. I nixed the SSD for now, I'l wait another 6 months- 1 year and see about prices dropping.

so whats left is:

Mobo
Ram
Video Card

everyone seems to love the UD3r and it is $100 less than the P6X58D, but the asus board looks so much better visually. I rally don't know why its $100 more though.

the ram I ws actually thinking of the crucial ballistix tracers 3x2 1600 kit. eveyone seems to say the g.skill is top dawg now...

I'm thinking of lowering my graphics card to a 5770. it should be plenty for my 1440x900 display right? I'll probably be keeping the display for a while(about 3 months) because I need to concentrate on buying a new house and paying for a wedding next year. well I need to show the wifey to be that I am seriously saving for it.lol

How often are you going to be staring at your motherboard? lol
G.Skill is just reliable, almost every build I've built I've used g.skill (except my own ironically, wanting to replace it though when I upgrade to win7).
5770 would be plenty for that resolution yes.

3 months is not a very long time, and a 5770 is likely to be a disappointment at 1920x1200 / 1920x1080. I wouldn't drop below a 5850 at this point. Forget about the SSD though, not worth it with your budget.

just what I was thinking... I actually looked at the specs for both pretty closely

-gigabyte has 1 lan, asus has 2.. who outside of a business really needs 2 lanports?
-gigabyte has 2 esata/extra usb ports, asus does not have esata and has 2 less USB 2.0
-gigabyte supports 2200 Ram, Asus supports 2000 . doesn't really matter to me anyway though

-gigabyte has 2 Firewire, Asus has 1

Specwise the gigabyte looks better, which makes me really wonder WHY is the Asus $100 more??!

Looks and overclocking features "justify" the Asus' $100 increase... plus, you're looking at one of Asus' high-end boards compared to one of Gigabyte's mid-range models. But your overclocking performance depends your processor as much as it does the RAM and motherboard.

but the UD3r is getting just as good of overclocks as the Asus, so were down to looks. which admitidly the looks and the brand name had me very close to buying it. but with all the excellent reviews out for it + it being $100 less + it being in stock pretty much makes the gigabyte a given.

and if your saying a high end version the midrange... Why do they Use the same Lan controller, same Northbridge, Same southbridge, same USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 controllers, the gigabyte has more native ports, and a higher spec for the ram. + its own overclocking "features" + dual bios.

Trust me I TRIED to justify the ASUS, I wanted it. but when I started really looking at the specs+reviews. the UD3R comes out on top...

ok, cancel that last statement, after doing a bit more I do see the UD3R is the low tier board. just the second wave that includes USB 3.0 and the new sata. the ASUS is a mid-tier X58 with the ROG line as High tier...
