I have a couple of x5550 and am itching for an upgrade of some sort. So thinking about upgrading to a pair of x5650 if i find some cheeapish maybe ESs. Would i notice much of change with the extra threads? I dont fold but going to be getting into it.

I believe the new Intel E5 chips are coming out within a month or two, and the performance over the 56xx chips is significant. I would wait and skip the 5650 personally.

Well since he says cheapish I'm assuming he doesnt wanna spend much money. Well, unless you can OC them, they will have the same speed between the two, youre just getting 2/4 more cores/threads and 4 more MB cache. If you have an app (like folding) that can get a direct advantage from more cores than youll see an improvement. For most other things like gaming and such, not so much. Your call really. Now the diff wont be that big in folding if you cant OC, but if you can OC then the diff will be bigger due to the QRB

A 5650 isn't a cheap processor, it's $1000 on Amazon. Also, the next E5 procs will likely be about the same price at the 2.66 Ghz tier as the 5650 is. Intel usually doesn't make a habit of price-gouging on the server market. Some slides I've seen show something like a 30-50% increase in performance between 56XX and E5.

For the price of two "PM for details" E5650s ( crapbay Link ) $740, you could do this:

  • Sell the X5550s for about $400
  • Sell the Xeon Motherboard $200
  • Buy a 4P SM H8QGi-F -$750. Link Bought mine here.
  • Buy 4 6128 8-core 2.0Ghz -$500. Link I know of 2 people that got 4 for $500.
  • 4 heatsinks -$100. hoth17 is selling 4 right now. Link

The above option would cost you about the same around $750 but get 2 times or more the performance than a dual E5650 system.

Thanks for the input. That option would necessitate a new case as well since i couldnt jam that board into my cosmos.

A0 are some of the best overclocking Westmere ES chips.

Another thing to consider is your usage for this machine. If it is a dedicated folder then the 4P supermicro board with some TearTurbo TM applied is the way to go. If it is going to double as a workstation then the Xeon's are going to offer you much better single threaded performance. Because the majority of desktop workloads are poorly threaded, you will be feeling the difference between an i7 and an underclocked thuban.

Thanks for the info!. This is my workstation which runs photoshop CS5 and Premeire CS5, visual studio primarily. And some gaming.
