x1950PRO AGP Does NOT overclock?

Anyone seen this happen? Raise the memory or core clock more then like 2hz and it freezes system and I have to hard reboot.

Using the latest CCC and ATI Tool '.25 Beta 15'


Another question regarding ATI tool.
What is Geometry Instancing? It is set to Disabled, should I enable this?
 
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Pros are not great overclockers. It doesn't help that they have had some power stability/longevity issues, overheating VRMs and such. YOu might double-check some of the threads that have discussed how to make sure your PSU is giving them enough juice, too.

PSU is not a problem, got 630W here with plenty of amperage on all rails.

Doesn't seem to be overheating either. This is a V1, not V2 card, but I am trying to get the most of it before I RMA it for replacement to get the V2 of this.

Yeah, I noticed after I posted that you have a Seasonic--no PSU worries there. On the other hand, there is no such thing as a guaranteed overclock. If it runs stable at its rated speeds, it passes QA at the manufacturer, and you really don't have any justification for an RMA.
 
It's a pretty well documented fact that the X1950pro's do not overclock well at all.
There are several threads regarding this problem and I have yet to see anyone claim to have had any real success... Here is an example.
 
i had this card for a month and, if i remember correctly, was able to overclock the core a bit but not the memory at all. in the research that i did, i found that it was a case of ymmv, more than any other video card.
 
I had the same problem when i bought one tried every program i could find and still it would just freeze if i tried to even overclock by 1MHZ so i took it back. From what i read while i was trying to OC it alot of people found certain programs that would work for them but nobody else it was strange.

Ahhh. That stinks.
This card is not even a whole lot better then my x800GTO that burned up on me.

System stats are:
P4 3.0@3.45
1.5GB DDR400
WD360ADFD

Everyone says the CPU is bottlenecking a little bit, but I've never really bought into that theory. It may be a little, but not enough to see nearly no difference.

Using latest Catalyst drivers with ATI Tool.

Oh well, guess I'll just live with it until I scrap this whole machine in a few months and upgrade to Quad Core in the summer.

Hey Intel, the latest Beta for ATITool is now .27 see link, and it now supports the X1950 Pro's. I would recommend changing the Overclocking Method to "Driver Level" if you haven't done so. If it's set to "Low-Level" it tends to crash as you found out.

That version has been around for a while now its actually the version i tried when i had the 1950 and also when they say "Added 1950pro support" their meaning PCI-E the AGP version and this release are still not working for some people but it did work for others, seems pretty normal for this card.

Tried that new version, no luck. In fact it's strange, it does not ALLOW me to overclock. When I try to raise the core or memory it just resets back. Wierd...

Guess I'll just live with it until I upgrade.

You could try turning on driver level overclocking in the options and trying again. The people that got it working said thats the way to do it.

Hey Intel, had this problem myself twice. Both times it was do to a bad load ATI Catalyst Package. It just happened to me when I had ATI Tray Tools and the CCC 7.3 loaded at the same time. I would try this and in this order just to see if it works.....

1. Uninstall ATITool
2. Completely Unintsall ATI Driver and CCC
3. Install ATI Driver Only
4. Intsall ATI Tray Tools and change overclocking method to "Driver Level". http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=733

I guess you don't want to use ATI Tray Tools, but this worked for a number of people I suggested it to. Good Luck.

What kind of overclock should I expect (are we talking just a few mhz or more)? Were you able to improve performance at all with the overclock?

I'll try that tonight though.

Intel, which Pro do you have? Below are the clocks I achieved with a Sapphire which I had for 3 months or so.. It could have been pushed further though, never tried it since the performance gain was not worth it in my opinion.

Sapphire X1950 Pro 512MB - AGP / default clocks

3DMark05: 9119
3DMark06: 4232

Sapphire X1950 Pro 512MB - AGP @ HIS ICEQ3 Clocks / 620 Mhz. Core / 1480 Mhz. Mem - effective

3DMark05: 9261
3DMark06: 4356

If you haven't read my posts, I had 2 bad HIS ICEQ3 V1 cards myself and gave up on them and so did OverclockersUK since they were the ones that suggested a refund after the second bad card. The highest the core either card would do was 614 Mhz. and the memory I had at 770 Mhz. / 1540 Mhz. effective. Performance gain minimal. good luck with the V2, I think they got it right this time.

Quick question, your talking about v1 and v2 of this card im assuming, when you say that, what do you mean what did they fix, is it only a HIS problem/fix or is this a x1950pro fix in general, and does it apply to pciE

I'm having problems overclocking my Sapphire x1950 pro ultimate pciE, im also having problems getting it to overclock in driver level mode.

I think it's a general 1950pro problem, agp and pci-e as I have heard both sides complaining.

I have the AGP version 1 but am going to trade in for the v2 of this card and see if it helps at all.

You only pay shipping one way, and if you call them or use the Online Chat, and ask them for a refund for shipping, they'll credit you $10-30 depending on what you are RMA'ing.

So basically you pay the shipping to ship it back, they refund you in a few days, and then they ship the new card for free.

Works out in the end to cost you nothing.

No, the problem I was referring to was specific to the HIS ICEQ3 Rev.1 first-gen x1950 Pro AGP cards. Myself and a ton of other people have had the same problem. Just ask OverclockersUK. They had a nightmare on their hands with these cards, they got 2 of mine back and more or less said almost every one they sold was also returned. The problem was this, a large number of the HIS ICEQ3 V1 cards could not handle the 620 Mhz. default Core clock and what we would experience was signal loss to the montior/LCD when the core was set to 620 Mhz. The users effected by this problem, including me, had to underclock their cards to 600-614 MHz. for them to work properly. A secondary problem was with the ICEQ3 cooler itself. A number of users returned their cards because the fan developed a nasty rattling sound. From all of this the V2 cards were born with lower Core clocks by default. Don't know if the rattling fan isssue was addressed.

HIS ICEQ3 V2 = 590 Mhz. Core/1540 Mhz. Mem effective / 1.2ns

I wonder if having faster memory and having it clocked faster will affect performance at all?

heh, thats funny, mine has the exact issues you describe (Rev 1). The fan rattles and it wont run properly at 620Mhz. I had to downclock it to 610 and the memory down to 1435 or so to make it stop artifacting. I will be RMAing this back to newegg and hopefully they will send a new Rev. 2.

I would wait a week or two as they just pulled V1 off of their site last week. They may still have a few lying around, let others send theirs in for rma and get another v1, then we can get v2's!

My visiontek x1950Pro AGP appearently doesnt have the temperture sensors on the memory and gpu, so I cant tell what temperture they are at anytime. The memory wont overclock at all, but the GPU is at 600. Thats about as good as it gets, unless i change out the cooler....I think they dropped the sensors to save costs, but they arent there and ATI Tool doesnt report any ability to read tempertures or change fan settings.

Yep thats the one i had and theres a thread on visiontek's forums about it where a mod confirms its missing the chip to monitor the temps :mad:

I had that one myself and I can also confirm it, no readable temp diode. The Gecube X1950 Pro is also very much the same, no temp diode on that one either and as a result, the heatsink cooler fan's run at full - 100% all the time. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why you don't hear many complaints about the Visionteks.

Think it is safe to RMA this back to newegg yet? The fan is really starting to piss me off but I dont want to get stuck with another rev1
