I did a search but didn't come up with anything aftermarket for cooling an x1950. The stock cooling on the card is very loud and I'd like to replace it with something fanless if possible. Is this a good option? I didn't see it listed in the air cooling sticky though.

While I'm at it I was going to replace the stock intel cooler as well. Looking to get a scythe ninja.

That place seemed to have some of the cheapest pricing in canada.

The most important question is whether I'm going to run into any sizing issues on a gigabyte ds3?

I'm not sure about passive cooling an x1950 of any kind besides perhaps the gs. They put out a fair bit of heat and I'm not sure a passive cooler could keep up with it unlees you have some great airflow in the case.

I use a Zalman VF-900Cu on my X1950XT. The Sapphire OEM cooler was extremely loud and not very effective. The 1950 series puts out a lot of heat and I wouldn't recommend trying to cool one without a fan. The Zalman is very effective and dead quiet on the lowest speed.

i believe the stock cooler cools better than the zalman when the fan is running 100% which is much noisier. did you leave the stock cooler with the fan on auto?

Sorry guys, I should have mentioned that it's the x1950gt and thus a very weak stock cooler with a tiny and loud fan.

I'd like to get a cooler that will also be compatible with say an 8800gtx or something in a year or so.

And I'm assuming the scythe ninja going to be fine on the cpu then? Also want something that will cover a quad core upgrade in the future. But it will be fine as long as I don't have to upgrade the motherboard.

i dont think that theres a vga cooler on the market that is compatible with both the 8800 and x1950gt

Boourns, :( :( :(

I got both the coolers I had mentioned originally and just tried installing them.

The HR-03 Seems to be incompatible with my x1950gt. The flat heatsinks that are supposed to go under the heatpipes still make contact. When the back plate is tightened down the whole board bends as a results. Obviously it can't be left like this so I put the stock cooler back on and awaiting response from thermalright... No one even picked up the phone when I called, pfft.

The ninja on the other hand is installed with AS5 but I'm only seeing a 2 or 3 degree improvement over the stock cooler at idle and load...

I'll take a look a bit later and see if the pipes are touching down on the RAMsinks on my X1950XT + HR03 non-plus.

Well if they are touching a little I bet it's fine. But on mine there is so much interference that the board will bend around that point when tightened down. The only thing that made sense is if the ramsinks that DIDN'T come with thermal pads are supposed to go under the ram sinks to make that extra 1mm clearance. But the place I got it from said its fine to return it because it doesnt work with my card. I'm going to try and get an exchange for the zalmen vf900 if I can.

Well, shit. Mine are making contact too on the center-top ramsink, solidly enough that I can't slip a piece of paper in the gap. I've been using this thing for 6 months in the 'over the top' orientation, and never noticed...

The sink is horizontally oriented, though. It looks like if I had it vertical it would barely not be making contact.

How do you mean horizontal versus vertical?

Sorry, I mean the memory sinks across the top are set so the ridges go left to right instead of up and down. The center ridge that sticks up the highest on the memory sink looks like it might not be making contact if I had it oriented vertically, since the ridge would sit between two pipes.
