Picked up an xps 8700 dirt cheap with a 4790. Just needs a hard drive. Giving it to a friend that's still running on 775, so it'll be a huge upgrade for him for his purposes.

It has no hdd, and has an open Msata slot. I'd like to utilize it instead of running a regular sata drive.

What about a 2.5" sata SSD, could be a cheaper and more available option in the used market. Speeds should be around the same.

They're dirt cheap on eBay for 256GB ones. You didn't specify capacity so start wtih 256GB: https://www.ebay.com/itm/205432118080
I think it may be limited to this size as this is the inside of the XPS 8700, and M.2 and mSATA aren't the same style slots, I believe.

Oh damn, he did say MSata, you're right. I only have a 4GB MSata SSD lol. Yeah he mind as well go with SATA. Chasing high capacity MSata is a waste of money. A 512gb mSata Samsung SSD is around $49 on eBay, I think someone here could get you a 512GB SATA SSD for around $25.

I have none to offer atm, but honestly I'd recommend just getting an mSATA to SATA adapter (~$6=$10) so that you can use regular 2.5" SSDs. mSATA drives are only marginally more expensive than 2.5" models, but the real kicker is that they usually have lower sustained performance and endurance since they have fewer extra nand chips for cache/overprovisioning/etc.

I've got a 128GB mSata drive kicking around. Untested, but should work; was from the freebie thread (they sent me two and I only needed one and the first one works, second should work too). PM with your address and I'll send it along.

I don’t have any spares on hand, but I’ve had need of msata a few times in the past decade and stumbled onto this. I’ve bought bought Samsung T5 portable SSDs every time I need an msata…

You take the T5, pop it open and:

^ There’s your ‘new’ msata.

These were basically Samsung 850 EVOs in msata form. Came in larger sizes and were faster/better quality than the generic Chinese drives Amazon carried. Later versions of the portable Samsung SSDs use M.2, so avoid the newer ones. We’re looking for the 250-500gb versions of these T5 ssds with a blue metal shell, should also say it’s usb 3.1. They came in 1TB and 2TB too, but I’ve never seen those models selling for cheap.

No reasonably priced ones at a glance just now, but watch eBay and you should be able to grab some for $30-50 - good luck with it.

I have two Samsung 256GB mSATA (forget the model) SSDs in little mSATA to SATA adapters. I don't need the adapters.
