I am putting together a server that has six backplanes powering 24 drives and each backplane only has a single 4-pin Molex port whch concerns me because every picture I have ever seen of any backplane in any Norco case has two 4-pin Molex ports per backplane for redundant power. I ordered the correct adapter but while I wait for them to arrive I have several question...

Can I use the PERIF (Peripheral?) cable which has 4 Molex connectors?

When I do get the SATA to Molex adapters, isn't each SATA connecter meant to power a single drive? If so then how is it ok to power 4 drives from a single SATA connection?


My power supply is the EVGA SuperNOVA 850G.
 
Seriously? it has been several days and not one reply? Is it safe to use the PERIF cable or not because I want to finish putting my server together and start it up but don't want to any of my drives or backplanes to burn up.
 
While I cannot give you a define answer if your Evga PSU will work, there is a reason that every major company makes SERVER GRADE PSUs that have 20+ drive connectors on them.
 
I used THIS thread as a reference when building my server and his power supply is similar to mine. I did a Google search to see what power supply's others were using with their Norco builds and they were also using similar power supply's like SeaSonic X850 or CORSAIR AX650 or a GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI. When I asked the people on the forum if the parts I was going to use were fine, no one said that was a bad power supply. I did not see anyone actually using a server grade power supply and no one ever said I have to.
 
Well, the max current draw for the +12v pin on a four pin molex, is 10 amps. So you have to know how much each bay will draw, and make sure it does not excede 10 amps under load.
 
You are fine to use the "perif" cable

Froms some quick searching it seems SATA connectors are rated at 1.5A per pin but there are three pins for each rail and six pins per ground. So that allows up to 4.5A per rail which should be enough for four of the drives up you have.

To keep volt drop to a minimum i'd reccoment limiting yourself to two backplanes per cable from the PSU.
