so i've still got my q6600 oc'd to 3.2 ghz stable on my abit ip35 pro board. i mean this thing runs great but now i see everyone with i7, i9 cpus and all the new motherboards that support them. the last thing i upgraded on my computer was my 8800 gts to a 470 gtx which did wonders, but now i feel like everything seems to be outdated as far as everything else on my rig. do you guys think its worth it to part my system out and buy the newer boards and cpus??
 
It sounds like you think you're feeling peer pressured to upgrade? lol jk...

If your current rig handles your needs, then no theres really no reason for you to buy into the new stuff. Unless you do want to just spend money on new parts. Although gaming wise, the q6600 is probably bottlenecking your 470 a bit, but it sounds like you're happy with the way it runs right now.

PS, there's no such thing as an i9 :)
 
After reading a bit here, people have been saying that when they went from a Q6600(even I7's) it was like night and day. From the reviews I have seen Sandy Bridge is definitely a great performer, beating the I7 980x many times. It would probably increase your FPS a little bit, since your Q6600 may partially be limiting the GTX 470.
 
The Q6600 @ 3.2ghz may not be power efficient, but it still offers plenty of performance, and while there are games that will be bottlenecked by the CPU, thats unlikely on your processor.

Just a side-note, if you aren't running a fast SSD at least as a boot drive, THAT is your general performance bottleneck, I promise you.

From bootup to application launching and what not, its by far been the most noticeable performance increase I have seen.
 
man, u guys are awesome. loving the input, took the stuff out of my mind away. i do have a feeling like my 470 is bottlenecked by my cpu :( i can tell by the games ive been playing. but i am running a raptor on my drives, and contemplating to switch to ssd. i mean if i do end up doing that, wouldnt it be better to just upgrade the whole system otherwise? as far as reselling these parts, id hope to get at least half of the money back that i spent on the rig... what do u think?
 
I doubt your Q6600 is bottlenecking your GTX470 especially if youre at high settings.

New gear is always cool so if youve got the cash to spare, nothing wrong with slapping in some brand new Intel goodness. However, if youve got other things you need to be doing with your money, your current platform is more than capable for gaming and pretty much anything else.
 
What are your favorite games and at what resolution? While I could see your benchmark scores go up, I just don't see you noticing much of any difference in framerates for most titles for it to be worth the upgrade IMO.

SSD's are a quick and easy swap, you don't even have to take the raptor out and can use it as your lesser used programs and games directory if you get a small boot-drive SSD. The only time consuming thing is reinstalling Windows, but even that doesn't usually take too long.
